Default motor choice

for those of you running 55t motors are you using the gear reduction box or just the motor with taller gears? or use the gear box with lower gears?

I have run both. 55 with reduction was painfully slow. 55 without reduction was usable but still disappointing. I finally settled on a 35 without reduction on 3s lipo. Its strong, stable, and fast enough for some table topping. I have also used a 12 with the reduction. It was still a little slow but you could pull stumps with this setup. Only downside to that combo is the horrible gear noise. The reduction box is noisy so I went with 35.

I run a 35t and 55t in my WK trail truck w/o box.

I have tried the 35t with the GRU in my WK based crawler, and did not care for it, so I did not even try the 35t.

I use the HPI Saturn 27t, GRU, 21t pinion, 88t spur w/locked blitz slipper. and a Traxxas XL-5 esc. Works great. A bit slow, pulls up stumps, and acts as a drag brake.

On my sons we are using a 96-12 with a integy 55T. You have to modify the motor and the top of the trans for this to work. He loves it and he said it has plenty of bottom end grunt.

I also tried 55, 35, 27 with the GRU and just found it too slow--I then went with a 19 and i get decent wheel speed and stump pulling torque--I don't think I could go back to just a plain motor on the king...

I also really love the built in drag brake that the GRU gives you...
