Question Stretch WB = relocating steering servo?

I have all the parts to stretch the WB on my wheely king but had a question. After I stretch the WB will I need to relocate the steering servo to the front axle or what? I searched the forum but didn't really find anything so I'm not really sure? Thanks!

NOPE. I have a 13" wheel base just make your steering arm longer with 4/40 allthread (lowes, home depot, hobby store) and some t-max tie rod ends. you can cover with alum tubing. Just cut on truck make sure servo is centered up and get your length. Basicly making your own. What's up in richmond? used to live there!!

skullking....Thanks for the response! I thought that I would only have to extend the steering linkage but just thought I would ask since this is my first crawler project. So why do I see everyone relocating the steering servo on the front axle? BTW I would rather be in Virginia Beach than Richmond. Love to be by the water.

Looks like a good place for someone who grew up in Newport News and Charlottesville to pitch in:

Putting the servo on the axle does two things - it lowers the CoG, and it puts more weight on the axle. When you're racing, unsprung weight is bad. When you're crawling, its basically not important compared to the added traction you can get from the additional weight.

Has anybody determined if mounting the servo on the axle increases the strength of the steering system as a whole? I know that valuable power may be lost through slop in the longer linkages/arms but is there any mechanical advantage that one has over the other - in terms of levers and such.

Just curious as I just moved mine down to the front axle.

i think it would have to strengthen it. You have a direct shot at the knuckle as opposed to, like you said, passing through linkages.

Any time you use linkage or extenders. it becomes weaker because the power is having to transfer through all that stuff. like the pivot mounted on the axle is plastic so it's flexing a little along with all the distance you have in links.

mine couldn't even turn the tires when not moving with my moabs and extended chassis.
I mounted it on the axle and it was a little better.

I would reccomend just mounting it on the axle and putting a good servo on it. it's one of the first things I would do if I built another one.

The servo mount on the axle is definatly the way to go:

Question

With the axle mounted steering servo do you need to relocate the shock mount or is there enough clearance? I have already printed out the templet for the axle servo mount. Thanks!

RCFeen:

I just went through this (and asked the same question) so I will answer this one.

You need to rotate your shock/lower stay mount 1/4 turn so that it looks like this image.

Click the image to open in full size.

You will notice a gap when you rotate the mounts but a bit of rubber - like some inner tube - will shim this nicely.

When you move you shocks to this new mount position, you should have plenty of clearance for you servo.

Clear as mud? Sorry, I've had a few beers before responding.

Yeah for hard core crawling the servo on the axle is the way to go! I am trying to stay a little more scale so I just left mine and extended linkage. Now if and when that breaks or gives me a problem will probaly mount on axle.

Thumbs up

SeanD....thanks for the info and the pic's. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the steering servo. I'm kind of leaning towards the scale look and will just extend the linkage. My wife likes to drive the truck and has a lot of fun with it so I'm not sure if I'll make the WK a crawler yet. Thanks again!

If you do not make it a crawler you should through in a 20t motor. a lot faster!! Thats is what I did too mine when I 1st got it.

I totally agree that the servo on the chassis looks much more scale. However there is little to nothing scale about the stock chassis (I guess just full size monster trucks, but they are ghey anyway).

The weight of the servo helps a little, not much though. Getting the servo down on the axle gets rid of the very weak stock parts. I don't care for over complicated designs. This is the simplest way of doing it.

AND ITS FREE!
