At the top or bottom?

I could move them out at the bottom, to the outside of the link/shock mounts, but they don't rub at all right now.

This tuber keeps getting better and better ,looking good JIA, only 2 things that i am not totally sold on , are the way the shocks are setup, would it be better if they could be inboarded a little on the top? and are you getting any kind of lockout for the rear? the stock one will fold in with little pressure.

If I move the top of the shocks in any farther the shock body will touch the shock tower. As of now I have about 1-2mm between the shock body and the shock tower at rest. Even though it's that close, nothing touches as the suspension cycles.

Inboarding the shocks won't really serve a purpose on this chassis. There's plenty of travel as is, enough that it'll need to be limited to perform as intended. Since the shocks have pivot balls at both ends they don't bind. Just smooth movement.

The rear will probably get locked, still early in the build.

I was just wondering, as they might do more dampening that way?

I'm sold!

Changing the shock angles won't change the oil viscosity or diameter of the hole(s) in the piston. Damping will remain unchanged.

By moving the shocks with a standard coil-over (Maxx shock) we can change the effective spring rate because we're changing the way in which the forces are applied to the shock, but we don't change damping by moving the shocks...the oil and holes in the piston will remain the same, as will shock rebound.

From Pirate:

here is a figure taken from Herb Adams book "Chassis Engineering" pg.36 to help with shock dampening values when mounted at different angles. this may give you some thing to think about when mounting the shocks.

I think there is some loss in dampening if I understand this correctly. I just picture a shock laying almost parallel to the lower links and in a droop situation its dampening effect would be a lot less than if it was standing up. As the diagram shows you are correct, you only loose 30% when cutting the angle in half. So it is different than spring rates

Doh!

Stupid me talks about effective spring rate of the shock spring in reference to the suspension then I refer to damping in reference to the shock spring when mounted on the shock.

Somebody smack me.

Dude, that is completely hot. I'm really liking the looks of those tires on there too. I'd have to say that's the hottest build I've seen in a while. Your crawlers are always lookin' tight....

Looking good Jason. I love your builds...they all seem to come out great. That paint looks sick, especially against the grass background. The Losi tires look better on it too.

Shoot...that part will be easy.

When your crawler is stuck on the rocks...just look 3 feet in front of you...that'll be the back of mine.

Yeah, the ESC and RX will go under the front and rear panels. Servo and battery on front axle.

[QUOTE=JasonInAugusta;754018]First thing I did was remove the skidplate and round the front and rear portions of the skid. Ryan bevels the skid but I decided to just clean it up on the old nylon abrasive belt.

I removed the stock 3x20 Phillips head screws that serve as the lower link/skid mounts and put a small arrow pointing forward on the top of the skid with an X-acto so I can keep the skid properly orientated from now on. The old screws will be replaced with 3x20 10.9 button head screws.

HI JIA your rig is looking great i just got my cobra today. I was wondering how you fitted the lower links between thr chassis and the skid plate, cause it looks like a little oversize

Thanks Brian

Thanks on the paint. I wasn't a fan of the way Dad's chassis looked until it was built. It's different, that's for sure. Unique.

bktoys,

Check out this post: Beckworks Cobra build

I used conical washers from www.xtremercracing.com for the upper shock mounts and for the link mounts at the chassis. They're brass - you can see them in the images attached to that post.
