try putting some oil on the drill bit as you drill. My guess is that you are heating the bit up and it is binding and breaking the bit.

good drill bit or cheap one.... titanium or carbide bits for steel....
make sure you drill straight... use a drill press if you can... if you angle the bit while in the hole.. it will grab the side and break....

meh... hope this helps...

Im do alot of metal fabrication at work, so here are a couple tips to drilling steel. first, center punch your hole location on the shaft. Next, get a 3mm drill bit, as the fractional sizes arent close enough to work well. You dont need a fancy bit to drill these shafts, i use regular HSS bits. Next, get some cutting oil, i use rapid tap. Now, when you start drilling, DONT over speed the drill bit! You will burn off the cutting edge of the drill bit. Go slow, using moderate pressure. 90% of the people i have watched using a drill overspeed the bit every time. SLOW DOWN, faster speeds just work against you, and if you cant resharpen a drill bit(a whole other topic), you have to get another bit. These shafts are easy to drill, i have done 2 shafts so far and havent even sharpened the bit yet.
