Why not just buy a 4wd wk off the start? Cheaper too. I would sugest a sw3 then you don't have to redo all your links etc. Besides the stock chassis is POS. If I were to do it again I'd buy just 2 tlt axles and build from there, but hey that's just me:)

Well my LHS has a pre-owned 2wd WK for $175 and I think the 4wd was somewhere around the $235-240 range? Then the 4wd converstion kit is around $35-40. So its a few bucks cheaper then the 4wd kit new.

It's too bad that HPI hasnt released a complete axle assembly as of yet. I would just start at the axles and work my way up from there.

Yeah the SW3 is a sweet looking chassis (props to Bender). However, I felt that I would try and get some use out of the stock chassis for the time being.


EDIT: $269 for a WK 4WD from my LHS (just got a reply email).

210 online for 4wd one from tower 25$ off a 200 $ order with this code 011J3 and you can get all the parts you need for conversion.

I would opt for the GC-1 rather than the SW chassis in the future. It's a proven winner.

Yeah with the loonie being on par with the USD then it might actually work out to be cheaper for me to order something from the states.

last night I did a test checkout on Towers webpage and it was about $30-$60 for shipping up here.

Hmm GC-1 ? Do you have a webpage link of what it looks like so I can take a look? I just looked on RCP and TCS and didn't see the chassis.

Is this GC-1 cheaper in price then the SW3 ?

It's a little more expensive than some, but it's the current champs chassis, so it's gotta be pretty good. I've seen it in action, and it does everything well. Austin is a pretty good driver, too ;-).

You won't be diappointed with a GC-1.

NERVE. get the SW3. Here in Colorado there is few HPI/SW3 that are very good rigs.

I like the GC but the way the links are, the upper will cause you some problems mounting to a HPI. If you can figure it out then go with what you want"thumbsup".

Just looking at both chassis and how they mount will help on your decision. (I would like to see a GC piled on a HPI myself)

Well that was my initial choice, the SW3 & WK axle setup. Seen a few builds and videos of how it runs and it looked like it was a worthwhile investment. Plus with reviews and all the feedback about the chassis etc.

I have started to consider the AX10 for initial build. But I think I would still like to do the WK build. I just have to get my butt in gear and buy the parts... lol.

The only thing of my stock wk I have left are the axle housings. You can buy them from HPI for around $14 apiece. Everything else is aftermarket. In fact, it's getting tough to call my rig wheely king based. Buy the axles and build from there. Good luck.

Well, if I was to buy just the housings and go from there, I would need the two housings, two 4x4 kits to get the internals, then the axle hub/knuckles to the wheels and any misc stuff I might be missing.

$28 (2x housings) + $86 (2x 4x4) + $26 (2x knuckles) = $140

For $35 more I could buy the 2wd version from my LHS, add a 4x4 kit for $43 and it would be $78 more then going the axle only route...hmmmm.

Good part is.. I wouldn't have all those unused parts ;)

Might I suggest that you check out 'Da Bull' from Double J as another conteder in your chasis search.

LOL yeah thats what I thought the $78 would be put towards instead of on the kit.

OK ... so since this is basically my build thread space, i'm going to be updating this over the next few months or whatever time frame it takes to build up this crawler. Whether anyone really wants to pay attention to this build or not.. well thats up to you.. LOL. It's not going to end up being anything special, just a build based on what other members are running and whatever parts are popular.

I finally have my WK 4x4 chassis to start out with. Purchased it Monday Oct 8th (Thanksgiving up here) off a guy locally to me. He had previously done some crawler work on it (king bling servo mount, links, stock electronics/chassis etc.)

On with my latest status..

I have found out that "unlocking" a diff is a LOT harder then what I thought. The reason why I want to unlock my diffs is, I would like to install the Rcguy WK Diff lockers from TCS. After spending about 2hours using a drill on my dremel, i'm just going to buy new cups and replace them. Its just too much work to get the glue outta there.

Right now the diffs are completely solid. They were filled with some kind of glue that has set and hardened. So drilling them out was about the only option, which now seems like a bigger waste of my time.. lol.

Anyhoo .. here are some pics the day that I bought it. Currently it is in pieces on my work bench. If I have some time later on tonight, I will try uploading some pics of the diffs.

Well as I mentioned earlier today about snapping some pics of what my diff gears look like being "encased" in this hardened liquid glue stuff... well, here they are.

I also found out that the glue does not like boiling hot water and it comes apart a lot easier when its warm.. lol.
