Default WK Double Oxy-Moron Chassis...

He we go again... I am stilll working the stock chassis for all its worth. This revision is a "Belly Drager, High Clearance, Drooper" I had a mishap when moving my micro brushless power plant to the WK. I was setting up the combo to a new 8 cell pack and poof! So my old EA20-20L Quark 22A combo is history. I was hoping it would scream along with its 12x96 gearing, but it wasn't meant to be. I will be temping in a 55T and a TR2 while I rethink what happened to the micro brushless power plant. Stay tuned for updates on the "Double Oxy Moron" chassis...

That looks good I really like those links. Did you make them or did someone else?

Well dang, that sucks about the ESC and motor! Did both smoke?

Yes JRH, and I am not sure why. They ran fine on 7.2 volts and from what I have been reading here on the forum the little outrunners like more voltage. I haven't run more than 7.2 on my 33A's either. I wrote to Quark to help try to figure this failure out? The motor was a real cheapie eBay special, but I have been running it for a couple years. I was hoping the micro brushless would do the trick in this high COG chassis. It only weighed 2oz. Maybe I should try another one. Any suggestions JRH?

The links were made by David at Xtreme. I got a set for my SW2/TLT too! He had a sale going on so I sprung for some slippery Delrin links.

Sounds like the motor gave up the ghost, and took the ESC with it. As far as little cheapies, I like the GWS 2215s. For nicer ones the Scorpion line of outrunners is the best value for the money on the market.

I like the blackout look of the chassis and links. I'm thinking mine might need to go that route soon. Is that the option black chassis or did you paint/chrome strip the sotck one?

And how wide are those wheels?

The chassis is HPI #85266 Main Chassis Set (Black) or you could strip the stock chassis. The wheels are Delrin Erickson/MSD 2.2 I am not sure on the width. Check them out here...

Default Stock Chassis Update...

Well anyone who has followed along with the evolution of this project knows I have been giving the stock chassis an honest chance to prove something; anything. I am more than aware there is a COG issue with the chassis and motor location, but I am looking for the best results it can yield without all the major changes. I have seen big changes in performance from minor changes in hardware. This is the second attempt with droop shocks. I gave the stock shocks several runs with different fluid weights and spring rates, but the stroke was just too short, or limited in my opinion. So this time around I am working with HPI Savage shocks. I gave the HPI E-Savage shocks a look too because I have one of those models, but the difference between them and the WK shocks was not very much. I may end up giving them a try though because the Savage shocks have raised the static ride height some. I am sticking with one spring rate this time and only tuning with fluid weights. After several runs I am still going down in weight. The extra long stroke from the Savage shocks takes a long time to travel. I didn’t want to start changing shock pistons to deal with the longer stroke either. Still trying to keep it simple, and that was the point from the start of this; Cheap & simple. Yes I have thrown in a few goodies that are not required, but I am still looking to make the short list shorter. I should be able to sum it all up in my next update. Stay tuned…

Hey theme, I saw that you did not want mess with shock pistons to help deal with stroke. So I wondered what shock position?? I laid my WK shocks back to get more stroke and smooth out the suspension abit. Here is a pic of mine before I took the old chassis out and chopped it up out of sheer entertainment. It's now being reincarnated as a killer tuber with a new transmission case You can see it here!!

Anyway here is what I was talking about

TRD,
I have tried other mounting positions when I was running normal sprung shocks and had some good results. It is not really any priority of mine to make this WK my best model. I have several others that get the job done and have all the goodies on them. I have also seen all the great work you and several others have done with the WK by putting it together with a more purpose built chassis. I am just trying to work up some cheap & simple mods for the RTR WK. I also hope those at HPI are watching what we are up to still, so their next release of the WK is closer to what we actually want it to be. A complete RTR HPI Crawler. I feel Axial missed their chance to market the AX-10 as a fully assembled RTR model like the HPI Wheely King. I would really like to see HPI introduce a RTR Crawler next. I have a blast with both my WK's. One stock one in the street and my modded one out on the rock pile.
