Default How about Waffle King?

After running my stretched wheely king for a while, i knew i needed a new chassis. I found offroaders templates, and made myself one. (Thanks alot Offroader!) It has all stock electronics and shocks for now. Front servo mount, and 15/93 gearing. One thing I did different, was add the battery box to the top of the chassis. I have seen where others made electronics trays and thought that the battery box could kill two birds with one stone. I know i need shorter shocks and might run a droop. The pinion angle is horrible but for 3 hours of work it isnt too bad. It has the stock 3 link used until i can get some tamiya stays. (if anyone has any, Im willing to pay) But ill shut up and show some pics. I just want to thank offroader for the chassis and Darkhorse for the servo mount.

Cool!

It won't be long before we have an entire army of "Widow Kings", then we'll be poised to take over the world.

Hey...where there's one spider, you're sure to find a swarm of them breeding

Looks good Juststartin...I would be concerned though about how top heavy it is. It sits very high and with that battery up there, it can't be helping the situation. You should look into a smaller 2/3A pack that you can put up on the front axle opposite the servo.

Lots of things can be used besides the Tamiya mounts. I used Nitro TC3 motor mounts. I think these are better than the Tamiya mounts because a) you can drill the lateral hole anywhere you want vertically to change your link geometry, and b) they're in stock and ready to buy most places. All you have to do to make them work is snap the trird link ball in backwards from where it is, drill the loest hole in the motor mount for 3mm to pass through, then drill and tap for your upper links in whatever position you want them.

X2 looked at the belly clearance and was concerned. I would ditch the 5.5 shocks for some 4" maxx shocks or 3.5 rustler fronts and drop the battery as low as possible

wow thanks for the replys. has anyone used these

http://rc4wdstore.com/product_info.p...roducts_id=618

i think they would be ok. I am probably going to order some high clearance links, roooster crawler, mg945, and possibly those shocks friday. I am really happy with the way it came out. Honestly though, it is really not that top heavy with the battery up there. It side hills and climbs just as good as when I had the stock chasis with the battery on front. Thanks for the response guys

Those may be on the long side. OFFROADER5 had some 120mm shocks on originally and found them to be too long. He opted for the Proline Power Strokes which are 105mm eye to eye extended. I am going to try out the Duratrax (rear) Evader shocks http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXAMK2&P=ML . They are 110mm in length. I picked them up on Ebay for 10.00 a set.

rc4wd.com does have these http://rc4wdstore.com/product_info.php?products_id=638 they are what OFFROADER5 thought I should put on Casper, however they are a bit more than I can afford at this time.

I haven't started my widow yet, so this may be a newbie question. What is wrong with the stock WK shocks? Are the too long? Too soft? I have most of my materials, and just need the time, so if the stock shock don't work, now is the time for me to find out why

Well, for me the number one thing was that they leaked:-(. They leaked from day one and not a little, but A LOT!

Number two was that once I decided to go with the "widow" chassis they were too long (unless you put springs or fuel tubing inside them to limit extension).

Number three is that once I converted to the "widow" chassis and took it out for a real crawl session:-P (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NL1U_pPe9s ) the stress placed on the shocks caused the plastic caps to pull from the shock bodies and leak oil (LOTS OF OIL):-(:-(:-(.

You can run the longer shocks, but it does increase your ride height. I would say not to go much longer than 4". This keeps your COG low and doesn't give you too much flex. With the shocks I have, it is at about the max I would want for travel. The longer shocks will give you even more articulation, and it may be too much.

Don't be afraid to have that belly sit real low and drag. Just make it out of some slippery acetal (Delrin)...or even Teflon.

How can you have 3" lower links and be all the way out at 13" wheelbase? My lower links (which are parallel with the ground) are just under 4" long eye to eye and mine sits at 12.5" wheelbase. Are you sure you measured right? Did you scale up the chassis plates when you made them?

Im sorry. My link length is around 4.5" eye to eye. 3" was my brakeline length. My chassis is around 6.75". These are rough measurements. I did some modifying on it tonight. I took the springs out of the stock shocks. I also got rid of the battery box and just used the bottom tray for electronics. I mounted the battery on the side of the chassis to counter weight the motor sticking outside. I get bad torque twist on the side the motor sticks out. I am hoping that when i get my new shocks it will help. on to the pics

Thanks for the advice. I think I will start with some fuel tubing, and if they leak, I'll look into getting new ones.

Looks like it is coming along nicely.

You might want to move the tranny/motor in so that the tranny mounting screw is as close to the edge of the skid as possibe. With mine, the spur gear does not protrude from the chassis nearly as much as shown in your pictures. That should take care of the tilting.

So how did you come up with the name of "Waffle King"?

If you look at mine, you will see that I added a little "ear" to skid plate to allow my motor to be even further inboard (by moving the tranny mount slightly outboard on the opposite side). The balance is really good and the driveline of the pinions is still smooth.

Just a thought.

Yes, you can. There are several guys running it this way with this chassis. You can lay it down on it's side and just use the same three mount points on one side of the trans to attach it through the lower skid. This also leaves you with the other three mounting points on the opposite side of the trans...now facing up, and you can make a small electronics try to affix onto those mounts so your electronics are right above the trans & motor.

Here's a pic of mine:
