How To: Extend Stock Wheely King Drive Shaft
 

Alright, To the people are cheep like me, or dont want to wait for the replacment drive shafts to come in, I found a cheep way to extend the stock ones.


The first step is to cut the stock female end of the driveshaft as shown

The Second step is to buy (or get from your stash of tubing) 1/2 inch potable water tubing. (the stuff i got from Menards is from Coastline Plastics LLC)

It comes in a 10 foot pole for like $2.77

Third, measure the distance you need the drive shaft extended to. Then measure that out on the 10 foot piece of tubing.

Then cut it using a saw or tubing cutters.

Once you have the piece, my driveshafts didn't fit, so I went inside and boiled some water and put the tubing in it. It expanded enough to fit my drive shaft pieces, but yours might not. So if it doesn't, get a 1/2 inch drill bit, and drill it out.

Then just slide them into the tubing. Then it should fit. if it slides around too much, you might want to put some sort of glue on it. I used Gorilla Glue.

Then you have an extended drive shaft for $2.77!

BEEFY! Probably the strongest shaft out there.

thats what I did before I got my emaxx shafts... but all i had layin around was 1/2 fishtank vacuum tubing, and i glued parts of a sharpie marker inside for strength...lol...

Thats cool. But I would rather get the maxx shafts for a couple bucks more.

but if your LHS doesn't have them and you dont want to wait, or as a backup if one breaks, this is a good replacment. just throwing this out there for the people that want a fast and easy drive shaft.

Yeah, its a good idea, and thats true if your hobby shop doesn't have them. I wasn't trying to be rude or anything. I just like the cleaness of a maxx shaft for a permanemt drive shaft.

That is an excellent idea. I am running the Traxxas shafts right now but am thinking about "upgrading" to something along the lines of yours. My current shafts are showing some good scoring from spinning against the rocks and your idea may be a good way to rebuild them. I am thinking about running a pin through both the new shafts and the Traxxas' rather than using glue (obviously you'd place the pin outside of the range where the two shafts meet). This way you can simply pop the pin and replace the "outside" shafts. I hope this all makes sense - it does to me but its too hard to explain in words.

I wonder what aluminum shafts would be like? They'd certainly look great.

I don't even have a crawler yet, but I just like reading this forum for all the "outside the box" ideas. This is one of those that really apeals to me. (I'm cheap too lol)

dont take it out in cold weather. pvc gets very brittle. good idea though.
