Default Ti plate source?

Wasn't sure where to post this, so since I'm building a WK chassis, here goes:

Anybody know where I can find a (relatively) cheap source for Ti plate? I want to build a plate type chassis and I'm trying to decide if I want Aluminum, Ti, or Carbon Fiber. I've seen aluminum 12"x12" sheet for around $16, CF 3mm thick sheet for $45, and Ti for $330!!!! (ack!!)

Is Ti REALLY that expensive or is there another source (or perhaps a lower grade Ti) for cheaper? If that's really how much Ti costs, I think my decision has been made for me (CF)...

thoughts?

Titanium is definitely not cheap. Good thing about it though is that if you were going to use 1/8" alum or CF, you could get away with about half that thickness in Ti due to it's stiffness and strength.

Titanium will be very slow and difficult to cut. It will also be heavier than aluminum and carbon(if used in the same proportions).

Check eBay they have a few auctions selling sheets in various dimensions.

I would look into buying a sheet of 7075-T6 and call it a day. It will be the cheapest of the three and the easiest to cut.

If you are ever in the LA area I would also check out http://www.calaerosupply.com/ They have a good scrap section.

Cutting Ti sucks. Cutting CF laminate sheet sucks too. I would suggest you stick to aluminum.

Titanium bends more than 7075 Aluminum. Unless you are building in some torsional flex Titanium is just a bad choice.

Yeah also if you want to put bends into your design I would stick with a 5000 series aluminum.

Another site.

thanks for all the input guys,

I was mainly looking at Ti for the bling factor, but it's just not worth it. I still may try the CF, at $45 for a laminate sheet, it's cheap enough to experiment with. Also for the bling factor...

Binary, Ti bends LESS, its very stiff. Its a very tough material to work, bend, drill and machine. Jbrandt, cutting laminate is easy, use an electric wet tile saw with a diamond blade, if you have one handy, if you dont use a friends. Anything else you have a big mess and less clean cuts.

Also a good idea to wear a mask and glasses when cutting CF

True, but the water helps capture the pesky shards.
