I am wanting to swap my pinion gear to a 15 or 16 tooth and keep the stock spur. Is this possible? When looking at it, it seems the motor is almost bottomed out against the tranny in stock form. Do I have to bring the spur up to 96 to get the smaller pinion to fit?

Not sure. You would have to try it to find out.

I could only fit a 15 or 16 with the 96 spur. Though if you're having problems getting a 96 spur, it's pretty easy to grind off the top of the transmission and slot the motor plate slightly to get the motor lower. Doing that would probably let you get a 15 on the stock spur. It let me get a 12 pinion on the 96 spur.
