| re: Locked Up's Wheely King's
For the sake of keeping these kid friendly I am opting to do a few things. I'm going to leave the axles open. At least the front. Locking them is going to put a lot more strain on the axle shafts while bashing, and that is what Kaden is into.... full speed smashing into things. I "might" lock the rear if a diff blows up OR if I decide to make some OT WK shafts. I'm also going to leave the front lower links plastic. Probably upper but we will see. Again, Kaden likes to bash into things and the front links having some give means they will probably last a little longer. I might swap to some aluminum links in the rear with Traxxas rod ends IF I can find a way to keep the cross link that assists with the wheelies. Yeah, he likes the wheelies. For the steering, I am looking into the best thing for longevity. I don't mind the plastic tie rod and drag link because they allow for some give, but the bell crank and upper 3 link mount are a weak point. I know I snapped those on my first one. There are aftermarket replacements available so I will look into those. I'm not sure if I need metal chubs or knuckles. I don't recall ever breaking those on my 1st WK, so I'll probably leave them as is, unless I find a smoking deal on some parts. Last edited by Locked Up; 06-30-2016 at 11:32 PM. |

Nice to see that some people still loves them.I have one aswell, with the old blue body, full upgraded with steel RC4WD gears,HPI HD gears and building some metal links with traxxas 4mm rod ends, brushless setup,MIP shafts.Diffs open for the moment, will see in the future if i will lock them or not. What i do recomend is to move the servo on the front axle and get the HR servo axle mount or build your own

I have a completely bone stock unit that my 5yo daughter loves to "bash" but I slowed it down with a 55T motor, overall its the perfect kid truck.

After a crash last night, Kaden had a servo saver let go. Partly my fault for where we were running them, too many obstacles.... but as I told him, running into something at full speed will do that! Not a big deal to fix, but I know it will happen again unless I do something. So either a slower motor or more beef in the steering. BUT, I know with these beefing up the steering means replacing 99% of it. I can't just toss the saver.... it's the saver, bell crank, turnbuckle, servo mounting system, etc. I want to avoid that as long as I can, but in the interim, I am designing something. Speaking of designing things... OT shafts & lock outs for a WK anyone? I figure that by replacing the rear parts it gives me spares for everything up front. And I like spare parts. Those are just prototypes, but yes, we will be making some. Production parts will be black. Last edited by Locked Up; 07-14-2016 at 09:18 AM. |

Could you make custom width rear lockouts with custom 6mm shafts? I ask because I was supposed to have some made a few years back by a trusted member, but he ended ripping me off.

It takes time and money to design, setup jigs, prototype and make a finished products. So you could be looking at several hundred dollars... which I suspect would not be cost effective.

Kiersten wanted a new body on her WK. So we ordered some custom stickers and did a fade job. Not my best work ever but she loves it! |

I'm not sure how many bodies I have painted in my lifetime .... but it is a lot. This is the first body I have EVER had a flaking issue with the paint. I'm pretty ticked off. I suspect the black undercoat I put on was either too thick or itwas just crappy paint. It actually would have been an interesting paint job too. Luckily, Kiersten gives zero poops because she is not anal retentive like I am. She was just excited to use the custom stickers I got her..... and there are a lot of them. This is the first monster truck sponsored by Snapchat, Musically, Tumbling, and Starbucks ... with a cat AND deer mascots. She used every sticker I got her. |

I'm in the process of modding a set using the lst knuckles, and also a stock set of knuckles with correct sized bearings. 6x11 to be exact. Modding the axle shafts is easy. If I could match the rear with some straight shafts that would be cool. I'm gonna order one of your lockouts to try, because the rc4wd ones only needed minor modification to fit.

Very nice upgrades for the WheelyKing, loved mine while I had it. Was setup as an open differential monster truck fairly stock when I sold it. Great getting your kids involved with positive RC experiences and I'd rock those cat stickers too. I haven't had paint problems in a long time, but my last paint job with Camel Yellow on my second Ascender flaked too. |
