Billet Frame Wheely King

I Decided To Build A Serious Crawler Since I Had My But Handed To Me In A Local Competition. Since I Am A Machinest I Thought I Would Build One Out Of Aluminum Fully Cnc Machined. The Frame Weighed In At .5 Lbs.
I Have Tried The Tuber Style And Failed Miserably In My First Attempt. I Went Back To A Scale Truck. After Much Research I Designed This Chassis. After All This Work I Hope It Peforms Well. Here Is What I Have So Far. Look For The Final Vehicle Soon

Dude, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that chassis that you "designed" looks suspiciously familiar to Offroader5's Manta Chassis he designed months ago. Other than that though, nice rig.

Don't Know That Chassis. I Used No Prints Or Tried To Copy Someone Elses Work. But With So Many Styles Out There, There Will Always Be One That Looks Like The Other.

It does look like the manta. But the chassis itself looks great. Good job on it.

I'll agree that it has roughly the same design lines, but at the same time, it does have alot that isn't shared with the Manta. Like Travis said, there's really only a set number of ways to design a chassis to look "tuber-esque".

On your chassis...the only thing that bugs me about it is that it seems very heavy and bulky. Is it all three of the pieces that weigh a half pound (plates and skid), or just the plates? A half pound is alot of weight to just have into the chassis. Maybe if you could slim down the plates to a thinner material?

My Widow chassis that I had made out of aluminum weighs less than 7 ounces...and that's including the side plates, the skid, the 4 lower links, the chassis spreaders, and the aluminum upper wishbone links.

BTW, what's the wheelbase on that thing? Looks really long

I like it and it looks awsome for a first attemp. Maybe mount the shocks to the inside of the plates, mill the 'cab' portion out a bit to save a oz or two and it would be alright. It looks like there's a few spots that could be shaved out. The only other issue would be running a body because it wouldn't classified as a tube chassis for competition, it's still a TVP design. There's been lots of debate over what a tube chassis is and isn't.

I saw this rig in person and it didn't seem very heavy really, I think he could finish it and see how it performs, maybe this weekend in our Winter Points Series kick off!! Come on Travis Finish it and lets see how it works!!!

I think I'd try building it out of thinner material, and making the skid out of delrin (which slides over rocks better than aluminum) for instance, the SW3 side plates and skid weigh 1/4 lbs and holds up just fine. Other than that, I like the design, and your machine work looks good Try mounting your shocks a bit more vertical, you might like it, and I suspect that's why you built all that adjustability in anyways.

my next chassis will be alot thinner an will use fiberglass side rales and a delrin bottom. I am also losing the roof since I will be running a body. The only thing I hate about tubers is when the roll over there is no cushion on the roof. That gets tough on equipment.

Taked to Rick (cars69) at today's PARC comp, he said you guys down south were building some wicked crawlers, he was definitely right about that.

I'd really like to see how the fiberglass holds up, might be to brittle... You could go carbon fiber, it's not that bad on the bay, just search carbon fiber sheet. Either way the billet one is SICK! Nice CNC work..
