Default what to get for winter jackets?

my brother & his family are being transferred to Idaho (USAF) next month. so my gf & i have decided to get my nephews & niece (6-15) nice winter jackets since it gets a little chilly there. being from va where winters are mild and little if no snow falls, it's something we figure they will need and a nice early christmas gift.

now the question is, what's the trend among kids on styles - shell with fleece liners, down jackets, parka, etc? and what brands - north face, columbia, burton, etc?

more than likely we'll get them north face or columbia gear since they have never failed me.

Not really the "in style" but Carhart always do good for winter coats but Columbia is always right there and definatly more stylish/dressier.
