| Just a teaser shot...
Anybody that knows me is all to aware of the fact I start too many projects...only a fraction of which ever get finished. But here is yet another that has taken up a large portion of my time as of late. Suffice to say I've been breathing more than my fair share of argon (that's a tig innuendo for you non-welding types). Just a teaser shot.... And for a frame of reference.... |

Just under 50"L x 14.5"W. If the tower doesn't work out as planned, I could definitely have a one of a kind super class crawler hauler! LOL Tig welding aluminum....not a problem, but I get to try my hand at fiberglass for the first time with this project...could be interesting. Started the math/measurement work for this project a year or so ago. Actually started working on it right about the same time I started the Rock Farce project, but this one is moving along alot faster than I thought it would, so it's getting center stage on the table for now. Another teaser.... |

100% Drill rig - 0% Crawler Being that I build the 1:1, I figured I'd try 1:8. |

Oh and just so everyone knows, the super rock farce hasn't been mothballed entirely.... Sorry, am going off on a aluminum tig welding binge lately. |

I need to source 2 3racing winch's, would really like to put hands on one before I commit to them. Anyone know the actual drum size and torque specs for those? As it stands right now, my TQ3+3 Franken-troller is fully booked on all 6 channels. ch1-Steering axle (empty clod axle in front) ch2-Movement (Tandem clod axles in rear) ch3-Pneumatics (outriggers and tower raise) ch4-Drill head movement up/down tower (servo turned winch disguised as the main line winch) ch5-Drill head rotation (servo modified for constant rotation) ch6-Aux/Sandline winch (3racing winch) Trying to keep it to 6 channels or less.

What about tapping long savage shocks? Should be able to make a piston with an oring seal out of something. Better yet, lego teknic used to have some decent looking ones. Quote:

I made up a pair of cylinders out of sch 80 .5" id pipe. Made up a couple of rams for them out of .25" crr and the pistons are made of .5" crr. End of the rams are threaded into the pistons. Still digging in a pile of o-rings for something that will work for sealing around the piston. The pistons are a nice tight fit without o-rings, so I'll most likely turn them down a little when I machine in an o-ring groove. So far I have them set up as one way stroke, tower stand up on extension, and an internal spring to help the tower return to horizontal. On board air compressor, no tanks. Will have to see how it works after the tower is mounted. Progress continues!

Progress has been slow as of late. The '77 J-10 has really eaten up most of my time (and resources). Being my DD, I've got to get it finished up before the snow flies....almost ready for paint though. I did get the cab done in fiberglass. It was my first real attempt at fiberglassing anything this big, and I am really pleased with the results. Still need to decide if I'm going to cut in and do windows, or if I'll cheese it and paint them on. Still need to mount up lights, mini mag-light reflector dishes fit the look pretty dang well as headlight reflectors. It is setup as a running chassis. Couldn't figure out why the turning radius was so horrible, even considering the clod axle and it's limited angles...realized I still had axle shafts and a spool in the front (what is a non-powered axle). Pulled them out and drove it around the shop for awhile. The motors on the back tandem axles were just some old school 27t Slot Machine's, and on a rig this big, it was scary. I swapped them out for some half shot 55t's, and still think I need to slow it down, perhaps a cheap set of 85t's will fit the bill. Speed is not the name of the game with this, it's huge and heavy. The tig unit I was using for all the aluminum work was more or less sold out from under me shortly after my last update, but I just picked up another setup last weekend, so work can continue when time permits. Still having trouble finding ready made pneumatic cylinders that fit the scale and function I need. The home made ones just look out of place. The 3racing winches I picked up will work great, but I need to find a way to enlarge the spool to fit more cable without destroying the scale look. |
