All I know is that I'll need solid rod. I don't really care what steel is used. My rack can be as light or as heavy as it wants, it's going on my beat-around-town bike so performance is no concern. I won't be carrying an enormous load, I just hate wearing a backpack. I still don't know what diameter I need, or how much I'll need... guess I have some research to do! "enormous load" |

Solid rod... enormous load... I'm beginning to see a pattern, Greggo. Is there something you're not telling us? |

....................you guys are weird.................so just a basket for your bike??? i would say 1/4 rod for the main frame then use either like 1/16 to 1/8 rod or expanded metal for the rest of it. all this you can get at TSC.

Yeah just a rack though (no basket) It'll be small, something like a Nitto M-18 NITTO M-18 ~ Front Rack [870-782-11] : • Milwaukee Bicycle Co. • Ben's Cycle I'll have different support legs, and I wont be spending $120 for the name... I think "1/4 rod would work good, and the legs shouldn't be hard to figure out. I'll probably be making a trip to TSC soon |

I have a pretty cool little hand held bender, nice high dollar tool from the 80's i picked up for 5 bucks. I haven't tried it out yet, but you are welcomed to use it.

I have materials! I think 12 feet of 1/4in. rod should work... I don't think I'll need to borrow that bender after all. I have settled on a design that only uses 2 bends. They'll both be "round" bends, so I'll bend them around a pipe or a pole or something of the sort. I need to find a pipe about 4 inches around, and another about 2 inches in diameter. Unless your bender will do that? |

not in one bend, no. the dies are only about an inch in diameter. you could pick up a couple of short pieces of PVC in the size you need and use a vice to hold them, a bend that large should form pretty easy with that stuff. Fire hydrants might have the right diameters on them.............;)
