Modded T/MF spool
 

In the pocess of re-designing the 'ol spool design. The main reason for this is that not all people have the means to re-lengthen CV shafts. This will allow you to just cut the shaft to length and lock it down with set screws.

I am modding an original design Yotachump spool. It has a 5mm ID for the stock outputs. I think if these were built from scratch they will come with a 4mm hole. Because so many CVs have different shaft diameters, this will allow the buyer to drill to the size they need for the shaft they have. I have drilled these to 1/4" to except a piece of 1/4" brake line.

I drilled two holes and tapped them to 5mm to accept set screws.

Pretty cool idea to solve a common problem.

I have limited T/MF axle experience but I am assuming you can install the shafts in the lockers and slide the axle housings (without knuckles on) over the one piece locker/shaft setup? Also assuming it would take a couple tries to get the shafts at the correct depth to fit the housings/knuckles.

If you look inside the chubs
you will notice 2 square blocks inside
those will stop the Universal knuckle from sliding thru

So then you would have to "GRIND" out those support blocks
making the Chub even weaker :cry:

But why aren't we making them with the traditional flat spot in the spool
Like any other spool...........I believe it's called a Taang ?

Any body can grind a flat spot on a round shaft ;-)

Just my 2 cents

I have been thinking about this dilemma for many years
that's Y we were going to make our own Universals (Short & Long)
with flat spots on them to fit a traditional spool ;-)

I think the more people that get involved,
we can solve this and other problems with the MF axles "thumbsup"

Why cant you drill a hole in the housing where the set screw is? That way they can be tightened and then plugged afterwords. Or like v84x4 said any body can grind a flat spot. I would rather have a steel spool. That way if I don't get the flat perfect and it moves around its less likely to damage the spool.

15/32 drill bit will clear, and there is still a lot of material in the tube. These blocks just give more meat for the screw to bite into. Nuttin to do with strength"thumbsup"

it's good you left some of the block
Those blocks have a lot to do with the Strength of the Joint
Otherwise the screws will just tear thru the housing ;-)

Honestly I have held the tubes together in other locations without failure. Now, I have a torque sensitive, callibrated touch, and not a big 'Ol gorilla grip like some people:lmao:

One major problem. My truggy shafts are still not long enough for the long side with full width axles. Won't be a problem with narrowed axles. Just shy by 1/2" :(

Great idea Bart! I know this is an old thread, but did you ever have a chance to run this setup? Did the inner diameter of the spool match up nicely with the cut down universal? It really appeals to me because I've never liked the idea of trying to silver solder a set of axles together.

It did work well. These axles were full width and I had to build shafts for it. That was the weak part. I did make access holes in the housing to tighten the set screws. Then just plugged them with set screws. My 4x4 mod puller runs this set up with narrowed shafts and I've never had an issue. I sold the mud truck to Crawler Innovations and that was the first thing he eliminated. Wish I had those spools back ;-)
