me build big truck I've never really built an RC from scratch before. After driving the emaxx I built for my brother-in-law, I felt a hankerin for a big truck. I found a chassis that was someones project, and have few mad force axles on the way. This chassis is all polished 1/8" aluminum, it's quite nice. I've got a summit gearbox and axles that I will find a way to make work, and some supershafty 4 link mounts. I'll need some shocks and stuff- big ol' tires too. 1/8 brushless power will be on tap, it'll take me a bit to figure out how this will all go together- http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...psfd58567c.jpg http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...psvoabwozq.jpg |
Re: me build big truck Because this thread lacks Kyosho content until my axles get here, I'll include this pic of my optimas to hold y'all over and prove I'm legit 8) http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...ps5593df13.jpg |
Re: me build big truck One pair of axles in good shape (thanks dezrick) and someone's unfinished axle project (thanks eBay) that I'll be using for spares. http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...psebb8e06c.jpg |
Re: me build big truck http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...psfd58567c.jpg What part # is that drive shaft? Is it for 8 mm output? Or can it be adapted for 8 mm? |

but otherwise really cool build so far! |

Lil' Bear- Yes it is a Turbo Optima Mid. Tough bugger and is holding up to 13.5T brushless just fine. Chassis layout is tight for electronics though. I prefer the OG Optimas though, they suit my driving style better. I built these for the Vintage offroad nationals this year. Next up is determining what shocks I want to use and rigging up the four link. Then on to wheels/tires -something with a 19mm hex. If anyone has a line on a short side Mad force axle dogbone, (EDIT- FOUND) please PM me- I'd rather not buy a full set if I can help it. I'm going to be cutting down the long sides to center the diff. |
Re: me build big truck One axle narrowed/centered- I did the hacksaw and sandpaper trick on this one. The next one will be two short side housings bolted together. http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...ps5f771518.jpg http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...psa59edb77.jpg Electrics are settled: an Orion 1750KV 1/8 motor and HK 120A I'll be using a Futaba BLS351 for steering, but may do rear steer too. I scored some big bore shocks on Amazon, 8 bucks a pair? I'll take it! http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...ps572a0857.jpg Most things are falling into place, waiting on Super shafty sharkfins so I can start assembly. |
Re: me build big truck Do you have a link to those shocks? i think they would be perfect for my slash 4x4 |
Re: me build big truck https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BC...f=ya_aw_oh_pii Looks like they went up to $60, I've had good luck on Amazon getting servos and bodies dirt cheap, but then someone realizes that they screwed up and the price goes back up. |
Re: me build big truck I've got the width where I want it with some extended 17mm hexes. Proline Rock rages (huge!) and xl GMC topkick came from tower. http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...psee82c45f.jpg http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...ps247300fd.jpg Still waiting on my Supershafty order, its been two weeks now. Is that normal, I thought this guy was legit? (Edit: They arrived shortly afterwards, took 11 days to ship) |
Re: me build big truck I think I'll have to do something about the driveshaft angle here. A new tranny mounting plate is in order. http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...psb302208c.jpg Otherwise I like the way it looks. It's big too  http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...ps3724b71e.jpg http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...pse97f7093.jpg |
Re: me build big truck What's the wheelbase on that beast? And love the big look looks like a leg breaker at speed! |
Re: me build big truck Wheelbase ended up at 13-5/8". It's an ankle breaker for sure "thumbsup" http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...psc2b747cc.jpg Moved the upper tranny plate down and drilled some new holes, flipped some stuff around cut some driveshaft and some new links- presto... A reasonable driveshaft angle. I'm not gonna lie, I ziptied some steering links together and popped wheelies in the basement. Now steering and shift servos are next. |
Re: me build big truck Where will you install the steering servo(s)? On the chassis or on the axle? |
Re: me build big truck An axle mount would be preferable, but the fab involved to mount it securely and clear the 4-link mount is distasteful. I will mount the servo to the bottom of the chassis plate. |
Re: me build big truck Electronics mounted up- http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...ps5b7dcb44.jpg Steering and shift servos locked down, high and low range is sweet. http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...psa4f7e093.jpg Done for now, just need to sleeve the links and paint the body http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...ps2644a779.jpg |
Re: me build big truck Pics of the finished body. Won't look nice for long, its either wheelying onto it's roof or braking and front flipping onto it's roof . I'll have to play with the punch and brake percentages. http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...ps4f20da91.jpg http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...ps4bd98883.jpg http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...ps3758ff83.jpg |
