Default My Kyosho Rock Force

I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of the new Kyosho Rock Force kits yesterday and wasted no time in getting going on the build.

I decided to do the build at home lastnight and have my girls help me instead of going to the shop to do it.

Juli got to work putting the axles together. The axles are one of the most unique features of this rig, Kyosho is the first to mass produce a rig with worm gear axles. Using the worm gear setup has several advantages. 1 the axles will not roll. The gear cannot be driven through the axle shafts, so if you let off the throttle the rig will stop. 2 with a smaller ring gear the axles don't need a "pumpkin" so you end up with a lot more ground clearance. 3 since the worm gear offers so much reduction you don't need your transmission to gear down that far, this also puts a lot of the torque in the axles and helps eliminate torque twist.

Here are some comparison pictures to give you an idea of how beefy this thing really is.

Inner shaft from an Axial, with an inner shaft from the Rock Force.

Outer shaft from a berg, with the outer shaft from the Rock Force.

Steering knuckle from a TLT, with the steering knuckle from the Rock Force.

The axles are all finished up. Took about 30 minutes with me having to help my daughter.

Next up we put the transmission and chassis together. For a motor I dug deep into my boxes and found an old Kyosho mega motor. The date on the box is 1989, so it's older that alot of our readers

The chassis goes together very easy, it's just a standard TVP with a bunch of plastic cross members.

The transmission just consists of a pinion and a spur gear, remember with the worm drive axles not a lot of reduction is needed.

Everything on this kit rides on bearings.

Next we put together the driveshafts. The driveshafts are all metal and put together in a very cool way. Each end has a hexed hold down the center of it, and you just slide a piece of hex stock into them. The aluminum tube on the outside just ads strength and makes sure they don't get hung up on anything.

Next we built the links, Kyosho uses MASSIVE rod ends for all the links, and ties them together with solid aluminum links.

Once the links were done we bolted it all together.

The Rock Force uses 2 different size shocks, the fronts are just a little bit shorter than the rears.

I built the shocks up using some Losi 35wt oil and popped them on. The stock wheels and tires have also been put on giving me a 11" track width outside of tire to outside of tire. With a different offset wheel you'll be able to narrow it up a bit.

Off to paint.

Man you guys are lucky!!

Looks like alot of the parts are the same from the "Force" line. Stubs and knuckles, possibly dogbones...

What does the body measure? It looks cool!

What size are the yokes on the worm gears? I'd imagine 5mm but it's hard to tell. Those rod ends are HUGE!!!

Nice pictures. And a pit crew to build it for you!

Nice motor choice, I was eyeing up one of my old Magnetic Mayhem motors I have, will decide tonight.

Great build Jason.

I am happy to see the enthusiasm for the Rock Force. Everything I saw pre-production about this rig showed me that Kyosho had done their homework, as usual.

Some of the handling characteristics you should expect would be near zero torque twist and axle swing with the feeling of a really planted rig. You should expect most all of the great handling characteristics of a Berg without the hassles of the gearbox being in the way and motors getting hung.

I can't wait to see some videos of these rigs!

The first shipment of Rock Force trucks were already sold out to dealers before they arrived. You will need to find a dealer that was lucky enough to get one from the first shipment. Finding a dealer that still has them in stock, may be hard.

Now there is some good old fashioned Kyosho BEEF. Jason glad to see you were lucky enough to get one of these.

Looks like the resale value of Axial stuff just went to crap!

This will be the basis of my new crawler for Midwest Challenge for sure.

That chassis kinda has a Benders sw2 look to it.
