Just came across this thread... I love it! The 1/4 eliptical is unreal!

I have a 1:1 '70 CJ5 myself and have thought about making a scale rig but yours is looking better than what I would probably be able to do!

Nice work, I look forward to seeing updates!

Thanks fellas. Just waiting on some rolling stock now. I have some new axle housing in route and some 4.3 gears. I guess I could get the trany mounted and then she'd be ready for paint. That would stop the rust from taking over. My color choice is black frame, red bumpers and cage, with silver body. It is modeled after my 1:1, or what it will be when it's done.

Thanks all for the compliments. This dinky fab work is very precarious(sp). Especially with my fat fingers. I'm dyeing the link mounts right now. The paint is going to be a while. I have a few more cross members to make and cut the rear one because my shaft dosn't clear.

Your scaled build looks great.

Nice GPW. I always liked the CJ3-B high hoods. Are you going to build it? I would build a 3B if I had a model. Very cool.

Hey thanks, i was thinking about getting a scaler, but I dont even own a rc crawler ( .. yet )

I've only been browsing the forums for a few weeks now and i really like the scalers you guys come up with.

I'd like to build the jeep, but i dont have the tools needed I'm affraid. I'm a welder so I guess I could pull it off if I had the tools, but I dont have a welder or a brazing torch at hand here at home.
I might just start with a plastic model at first anyway, to see if I really like rc crawlers before I get too much money into it :-P

Well if you've ever done any brazing, this silver solder is a snap. Figure out what axles you wanna run and then trany....... Before you no it, $500 is shot to hell. I've easily got a Grand wrapped up into my TF Super. Buy yourself a truck first and get into crawling first. Then if you like it build a Scaler. A little RC no-how goes a long way. I used to race RC10's in the 80's and just recently got back into RC. It's nothing like it used to be.

Yeah i've done copper pipe brazing, i guess it would be similar.
Would you recommend the ax10 rtr as a starter wich i could modify into a scaler later on ?
Or should I wait for axial's scx10 to be released ? I'm kind of reluctant about it, since it's a kit with no electronics, wich would cost me more just to get started.
Anyway, sorry about all the offtopic chat in your thread, I'll go ask all my questions somewhere else :-P

Hell that's not a problem. I'm kinda biased about this subjuct, but I would invest in the Kyosho Rock Force 2.2, and get yer feet wet. Then build a scaler. If you want the running gear I have on my 5 you'll have to watch the bay for Kyosho Force. Mad Force and Twin Force run pretty much the same axles.

hmm i'll check it out. I might not be able to look for any updates right now anyway, work has been rare.

Also, do you think you will get a noticeable decrease in play time with a heavier metal body ?
I remember playing with toy-ish rc's, and the playtime was horrible. Performance decreasing after only 10 to 15 minutes.

My Super (CD 2.0) is at 11lbs with a 10t HH Cobalt Puller which is a hungry motor and I get 20-25 minute runs with 7 C cell's. I used to run a 55t lathe and got an hour or better w/ 8 C's. This rig will be running a 55t Tekin and it should weight less (knock on wood) than my Super.

1 hour sounds nice to me, 20 to 25 seems a bit short though :-(
Do you carry 2 battery packs, or is 25 mins enough for your average crawling session ?

Also, when you build a custom crawler that's bigger than your average 1/10,
do you need to make your own custom links and driveshafts ?

To get the power of the Cobalt my only other option is to go LiPo. I just haven't made that leap yet. All my rigs I fab links out of 1/4" solid aluminum and drill/tap. It's a little more work but I like the results. I only run one pack that is permanently mounted to my front axle. It's a little bit of a drag recharging, but that will change when I go LiPo.
