the mini-Savage's key component will be here early next week, along with the revised wheel hexes, so the whole project hinges on one shipment. i put the steering-wheel idea on the back burner since you'd never see it moving when the truck was in motion.

looks like u could walk over to it get in and drive :P, i wish i had the skills and patients to do something like that, but yea, good job, man that looks SWEEET !

the Mini-Savage's cooling head was delayed, so i had time to sand and paint the front bumper for the third time (and finally get it right) and add inner fenders. wheel hexes to make it driveable are shipped and really should be here soon.

back to the subject of the axles, if anyone wanted to use these on an actual crawler, just put a turnbuckle on the steering knuckle location and bolt it to the top of the shroud for a little extra stiffness to keep the copper axle tube from bending.

on a stubby axle like this one it's not neccessary, but if you wanted to make an extra-wide crawler axle, the design is limited only by your imagination and common sense.

here's a few pics i took this morning.

i decided on the Savage for a couple of reasons: one, the cylinder head is bigger, so the milled-aluminum part will be that much more impressive when it gets done. two, i have a few Savage bodies with extra stickers so the body is easier, and three, i think the Savage is a better truck than the Maxx as far as nitro monsters go.

ain't life cruel? i got my wheel hexes today and it's pissing down snow. but the Ranger is as done as it's gonna get. enjoy the show.

dammit! i knew i was forgetting something!

actually, the Ranger came with seatbelts, but they attached to the back of the seat so i left 'em off. if i decide to put a driver figger in there, i'll belt him in. i'll have to cruise the toy stores and see if i can find a Goldberg. (trying to find a Ron Jeremy figure to do the body swap will be a little harder, i may have to live with Goldberg's physique, if the Ranger can upgrade, why can't i?)

just found out the Mini Savage won't get it's head til next year (glad i don't have to wait a month to get head!) but the fun's not going to stop there. as soon as the Christmas shopping madness dies down i'm gonna pick up some copper tube at Homey Depot (no way i'm going there on Black Friday weekend, bad enough i have to work) and make a rollbar to cover up the holes in the bed sides. also pick up a tubing bender to make the bends nice and neat as i'll be using 3/8 tube and don't want to kink it. a little fishmouthing, a little brazing, a little paint, and we'll have some more coolness there.

maybe some Duracell lights up there, too. haven't decided.

Once I sold off the Maxx parts I wasn't using, the project became financially self-sustaining. I figure about $200 over the cost of the Maxx I started with. The only "exotic" parts required are the alloy diff cases, and you only need the rear set if you only do one solid axle.

The project continues. I picked up some 3/8 copper tube and a bender, to make a rollbar for the bed. Finally going to cover up those holes in the bed sides! (Not a full truggy, just a bolt-on type street bar). Maybe some lights up there, too.
