Default Axial SCX6 - 1/6 Jeep

Soooooo, I just saw this today:

SCX6 Jeep JLU Wrangler: 1/6 4WD RTR Silver

Comes in two versions, a green and a silver one. I was looking at the Traction Hobby 1/8 ones but this one just popped outta the side. Looks like a enlarged SCX10. Doesn't come with portals but that's a good thing I think.

Too bad it comes only in RTR...

I'm getting one step closer to hitting that pre-order button...

Man, I think this is going to be great! As much as I want to pull the trigger on one of these, I will likely wait to see if they come out with a stretched Gladiator, like they did on the SCX10 III. I should have waited on that one too...
The price tag is a little hard to swallow, but likely not really out of line. I think if they priced the RTR under $1k and had the option for a kit, it would sell like gang busters.

Excited to see what comes next.

Just returned from the lhs. I pre-ordered on the 14th and they called this morning (29th) to say that my Jeep had arrived.

First impression is that the box is smaller than I'd expected. I got the Losi SBR 2.0 earlier this year and the box for it was larger - hard to fit in the car. This one fit in the car with no problem.
Okay, that's enough about the packaging. Let's open the box and see what we've got here...

Second impressions:
The body seems very heavy for what it is - and the weight is high up. I think this is due to the roll cage. I'd be very tempted to remove the cage to lower the CG. The cage isn't easy to see through the tinted windows anyway.

Also, the LED wires are too short to allow for the body to be removed and sat to one side. I'll want to extend the wires so I won't need to plug-in the lights every time I remove the body.

The shocks seem a bit over-dampened for my liking. I prefer the suspension to be softer and more compliant so I'll be testing some less viscous fluid. Or, I might even drain the fluid and give that a try. I run the Bronco's shocks dry except for some grease to prevent stiction and the shafts becoming galled. Not sure that a slow moving vehicle like this benefits from having dampers. I've asked HH tech support for the current fluid viscocity. The spring rate seems okay.

I'm just getting into the manual. The ESC is absolutely packed with features. It has RPM/Throttle Matching (also called Field Oriented Control) that is user adjustable (low/medium/high). The drag brake's factory setting seems a bit aggressive especially in low gear. It has a drag brake rate adjustment (level 1 to level 9) and default setting is level 4. Decreasing the rate will soften the brake. The drag brake force adjustment range is 50% to 200% and default is 80% so decreasing it 30% probably won't make much of a difference.
A programing box is need to adjust ESC settings (p/n SPMXCA200). Like the Losi SBR2.0's radio, there is battery level telemetry displayed on the Tx - a series of lights to tell you how much battery remains. This requires use of Spektrum's smart technology batteries however.

Axial does include a very large decal sheet (mostly just promotional and customization stickers) but there are a few decals to finish the tail lights. Unfortunately, they've neglected to provide instructions showing how and where to apply these decals.
I found this video several days ago that is helpful. He covers the tail lights at around the 13:30 minute mark:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYYmyYcEFbw

I think the smaller "SCX6" stickers will be handy to apply to the Tx.

Also, in the bag are four AA batteries for the Tx but I did not find any tools. After decades in the hobby, I think this is the first RC I've seen that didn't include at least a few allen wrenches. Even RTR's typically come with tools.
Anyway, A 10mm nut driver is needed to remove the wheel nuts. I'd reckon that most folks who buy this truck already have tools but there might be a few out there who don't.

The truck tends to lean with a single 3s pack installed on one side. It's probably best to fit a second pack on the opposite side or a weight of some kind to provide balance. I'm thinking about fitting an A-B toggle switch to select between the two batteries out on the trails without needing to remove the body. The Losi's battery died out on the trails one time and I had to carry it back to the car. Lesson learned - always bring a spare battery.

The ESC programming box arrived yesterday so this afternoon I had some time to tinker with those settings:

RPM/Throttle Matching: low (default is medium)
Max. Reverse Force: 50% (default is 100%) This limits top speed in reverse
Drag Brake: 50% (the lowest setting, default is 80%)
Drag Brake Rate: level 2 (default is level 4) There's an "auto" setting as well which adjusts the rate depending on how fast the truck is moving - clever.
Start Mode (Punch): level 3 (default is level 5)

I won't be able to fully test these settings until I get out on the trials (especially Throttle Match and Drag brake settings). It's raining here again today but by running the truck around in the house I could tell the lower punch and brake settings makes the throttle action smoother and less abrupt. I could set punch to level 2 or 1 to make throttle action even more smooth.

"Smooth" is my word for today.

Thanks for the reminder to get the programming box LEV8, I could have sworn seeing you could also adjust setting with button presses but I dont think thats the case.

I got out for a little test drive on my little rock pile, it was raining but it did surprisingly well. Currently my rock pile is setup to challenge comp (cheater) rigs, its just quite steep too steep for most trail rigs. Well the SCX6 didnt really care.

Out of the box the control is so good that I was immediately confident to push its limits. Throttle control is great, when in tricky spots I can easily reverse without worrying I'll go too fast and drop off the ledge I'm trying to stay on.

The steering servo is definitely not up to the task as everyone has said. I though about just adding a BEC to see if more amps might help but its so bad I'm not even gonna try. 1/5th scale servo is on the way.

Awesome, I love seeing these big rigs being made and especially a crawler.

For the money spent, I really feel it should have a stronger servo from the factory and possibly a higher rated ESC.
I really want to pull the trigger on one of these, but it’ll have to wait little longer.

I noticed these wheels from Injora posted today.

They appear to be a reproduction of the stock Black Rhino Primm wheels.
Color options are available.

I wasn't thinking about upgrading the wheels on my truck but at $110 for a full set of CNC alloy beadlocks, maybe I will.

Those are SWEET - I have a few Injora bits and bobs, but nothing major - with these it looks like they are trying to be serious players in the RC crawler game!

Not copies, and excellent color choices - the BRONZE!!! (drool...)

Damn, over 10oz per corner - make your SCX6 feel PLANTED!

(I'm feeling the sugar rush from too much energy drink and some 7/11 donuts - yep, since I worked until 8PM today I got my Thanksgiving dinner at the corner store!)

Hmmm, I don't know if I agree with that. Your wheel and tire package looks really good to me.
In fact, I'm thinking about painting mine as well.
Setting aside the weight difference, from a purely aesthetic perspective, once you're out on the trails and the truck is covered with mud and dirt, who cares if the wheels are aluminum or plastic? Throwing more money at it isn't going to make the truck more fun to drive. Just my opinion, of course.

By the way, I couldn't help noticing all the Blazer and other assorted Chevy square bodies in your collection. I have a weakness for early Chevy's and well, all pickups actually. Imagine the SCX6 with a '70 Chevy short bed pickup body.
Wouldn't that be awesome??

Rich was on stream with Matt from SBG last week and he mentioned that Proline has an SCX6 on hand and we should expect parts to be incoming. We've already seen 1 tire (Hyrax) and I expect to see some bodies too though I would imagine they'll be conservative on how many bodies since it will likely be a lower volume seller.

Those Hyrax tires look really good. Although Proline isn't known for making highly detailed bodies, the fact that they are looking at the '6 gives me some hope.

I'm still waiting to see if Traxxas will enter the 1/6 scale crawler market. If they do and leverage their existing licensing agreements with Ford and Chevy then things could get real interesting. I have no problem running a Traxxas body on my Axial if it fits and looks good.

Meanwhile, I noticed these aftermarket ring and pinion sets on ebay this morning. The gears appear to be fully machined and maker says they are hardened steel so they could be an improvement over Axial's cast metal gears. If you're like me and plan to keep your truck for the long term, this might be a good investment. There's a lot of reports of failed ring and pinions and these failures could be due to poor shimming at the factory but it certainly wouldn't hurt to have a backup set of gears made from hardened steel just in case -- especially if you run your truck on 4s. At $100 for a full set, they are the same price as the stock gears.

Yeah I'm a GM guy...probably has to most of my family working for GM for a long time! I'm hoping for a Blazer body for the SCX6 or a least a squarebody....
