Default ZoSo Willys Rebuild

This should be a simple rebuild with a few add-ons I bought new HD gears for the R2, but Rich has me questioning that idea...so...maybe an axial tranny instead. Next will be the repositioning of the steering servo. This will help with the bump steer and add suspension travel. I bought a slash light system w/10 lights 20.00 2 head 2 amber 2 rock 1 blackout 1 dash 2 rear Next will be the servo controlled steering wheel. I'll do a detail on the mounting. A new front bumper and winch. Probably the 1/8 scale 3Racing winch. Than finally paint and scale details Flat Irons and new rims. ..................................................

I've read your original build thread probably five or six times, so I'm really looking forward to this.

I've rebuilt the front and rear diffs, surprising how little wear the ring and pinion have. (a year in the willys....6 months in the 2.2 JK......over a year in the SpiderPig comp rig. Props to RCP Crawlers, the ring and pinion are greased up and ready for another year for heavy duty crawling. The R2 tranny didn't wear so well. (I'll post tranny next)

here's a couple links to a bunch of RC photos

Man, I like the idea for new paint. The contrast of the colors sets it off.

I too am impressed by the lack of wear on those diffs. Good stuff.

well the metal dust says it all

I decided to stick with the R2
I installed the new gears and bearings in a better case.
The old case has worn out pilot holes everywhere.

moved the location of the steering servo

and cut the back a little

than sanded and painted all the parts

Chuck's been working hard ... beer break

next I installed the steering wheel and servo
(2) bolts in the dash is all it takes

than I illuminated the dash gauges....pretty cool

the willys is just about ready....the steering wheel is working
and the lights are in ...just need to add the finishing scale touches
and start scraping it up

Looks great man. Chuck has a sweet ride.

Zoso,

That's one really, really nice rig. I like it very much - especially the lit gauges. Stoke of genius, man.

I'm building one myself. I have something to aspire to.

I hope you don't mind...I'm stealing the lit gauges idea. The only trouble is that I need better gauges. I don't have the Hasbro brand body. Mine is a Soldiers Of The World. The quality of the seats and body is very similar to yours, but the gauges rather...uh...ummm...well...suck.

No matter. I've been having a helluva good time building it. It's taking me a while, but I have family and business obligations that keep me pretty busy too. The really fun part is sitting in a boring meeting, shmoozing a vendor with one side of my brain and figuring out my chassis geometry with the other.

Again, nice work.

Oh yeah...you can probably loosen up those arms a bit with a drop of penetrating oil on the joint rivet. Use a silicone based lube and you won't risk the lube attacking Chuck's arm. I've also thought about drilling out the rivets at the shoulders, elbows and wrists completely (if he steers with both hands) and replacing them with pins so the arms move very freely. I hate to suggest that Chuck go "under the knife"...

I'm gonna try 2 little eye-hooks at each joint (elbow and shoulder)

Here's a new video

The eye-hooks will definitely work. Talk about going under the knife...

Nice vid., man. Better watch out for your lantern, though. It's rattling around pretty good back there. The mantles won't make it at that rate. :-P
