Default Certainly not original "Willys"

Don't like to be a follower...

But after seeing these 6th scale rigs in action, I was left with no choice. In fact, the first time I saw one of these rigs I thought it was real on youtube. Drivers hand on an actual working steering wheel and a lantern swinging back and fourth as the rig negotiated the rocks. The fact that I have loved Jeeps since my single digit years, it only made sense to built this toy.
Started off with a Dragon model.

I will post a painted view soon. Trying to decide what drive train to put under it. I have an Axial trans w/ dig unit and a pair of T-max axles I was thinking of making solid axles out of. But really like the aluminum axles RC4WD has with the 16:1 box for the motor and distributor box. Also toying with doing a metal frame. The plan is to build this thing to last so maybe it will only need the electronics upgraded as time goes on and it gets old.
This will be a pretty slow build since I recently just put a bunch of money into an XR10. Have to work with the wife a little on this one. After talking about getting (I will call it) an "action figure" (because I don't play with doll's). She wanted a girl doll... er... "action figure" in the passenger seat.

To be continues...

Hate to break the Willys look, but I think you're going to need some kind of roll cage if you expect it to last

Well, it is painted any way... All in due time, just got the body together. Kind of thinking of building a frame/ bumpers/ sliders/ and of course a cage.

My skill's are definatley lacking.. Tried to give the seats a weathered and worn look. The digital camera did seem to pick up a bit of red tint in the brown on the seats. Need to spend a little money on the XR10 to get it back on the rocks before any thing else is done with the Willy's.

No progress to report, it is sitting on the shelf in full model form waiting for money to go further. I do have a poser shot next to the water fall if that is any kind of a fix.

Well... Life has had this on hold for a minute. Finally relocated and reunited with my Dragon style Willy's. er... My wife on the other side of the country. I have been patiently compiling parts for this build.

Building Vanquish Wraith axles with Felsenfest lockers, Axial heavy duty deep gears, Axial universals, and Avid ceramic bearings.
RC4WD planetary transmission/ Disrupter T1 2.18:1 transfer case/ Python 2.2 bead locks/ Roc-Lok tires.
MIP drift shafts
R.Lee Ermy will be piloting the rig.

Once the axles are built the plan is to work on an aluminum frame for the body to sit on.

Pics to come..

Now that will be killer. You need an onboard MP3 with a bunch of Gunny Hartmann sayings to go with him...

It looks great as a static model! Once you get a chassis built for it, mounting the body should go pretty quickly. Thanks for posting the pics.

Here is what little I have collected over the past year.

R. Lee is a motivator with a number of adult lines spoken at the push of a button on his back.

The fancy new lockers and heavy duty bevel gear 43/ 13.

Sticky grease!

VP Wraith axles fully assembled.

Drive train in need of a frame and 1/4 VP titanium control arms.

Need to paint the inner wheel flat black then assemble all the wheels.

R. Lee Ermey taking command of his Willy's.

Time to sit down and figure out the frame so I can at least make it a roller. The electronics should not be to big of a deal. Thinking of running an FX-R speed control.

What does the Willy's crowd think I should be doing for a motor?

One big project is going to be the cage and body armor. That is another issue. Would an aluminum cage if it were designed with proper triangulation hold up to the spills and thrills this rig might encounter?

I'm drooling over those VP axles! I've used FX-R's in every scaler that I've built, they are great ESC's and their small size makes them easier to hide. I've been using a Holmes Hobby 35T Torque Master in my jeep. I've had a bit of an over heating issue when it gets real hot outside, I don't have any air circulating underneath of the hood.

I'm going to experiment with a 550 sized motor in the next Jeep, a bit more torque can't hurt!

Big Sky, I have been envious of your Willy's and Young Version posted up his build with Wraith axles I decided that would be the direction. I had been thinking of building a set of WK axles but like the with the Wraith provided without all the extra scrub radius. When VP came out with the housing, that was the one for me. Built my XR10 with their product and have been completely satisfied with the quality first and the look second.

I need to sit down and figure out my gear ratio with the planetary transmission/ disrupter transfercase/ and the gearing. I was thinking of running a 45t like my XR10, but not sure what either crawl ratio are and this thing is going compare to a boat anchore in weight from what every one else is posting. So many options that I am not really familiar with. I saw some one had a puller motor on theirs. Again I am a little lost..
