| Harley's Willys
I'm going low key with this one. I almost started this thread three times now Every time I was about to start it something came up and I trailed off. This one is just going to be for some good fun, don't plan on getting too crazy with the parts list or anything. I've had this body for about 2 years now (actual date of 1-28-11), seeing ZoSo's running around at Nat's along with a couple others made me want to move on the project finally. From the day I picked it up. |

I had been screwing around with some tube lines the other day and posted this photo on my Harley Designs FB page. Turned out to be a good deal because I was given a tip on where to get a set of frames rails to use. Still not sure if he wants the details spread over RCC of where it came from. Looks like a great start to me! Always nice to have a base to work off of. Last edited by Harley; 09-21-2012 at 03:25 PM. |

Beyond some initial planning I've haven't gotten much done. I have hoarded a couple sets of Wraith axles so one of those will find it's way under this thing. I'm not going for a stock look, more of a built up trail rig. I am AMAZED at the selection of 1:6 scale pieces available. Not sure why this segment of the hobby isn't WAY bigger. Anyway, just a BS thread until I can make some real progress. |

I agree. I don't really understand why 1/6 crawlers aren't more popular. I love my Willys and it's more fun to work on than any other rig I've owned. The only reason I don't spend more time on it is simply because there's no other 1/6th scalers around here to crawl with so it kinda let the wind out of my sails. Looking forward to see what you do with this! |

Your frame guy has a nice product, it will make the rest of the build go a lot smoother although the stock plastic chassis is unbelievably strong, my orange Jeep is still running the stock frame. You're going to love this thing when you get it running, they feel more like a large scale model that runs as opposed to a RC car. |

I was really surprised how stiff the plastic is on these things. I cut out the engine bay the other day and that was a huge pain in the ass! My ultimate goal is to get a scale engine up front, motor inside with an R3 behind it.

My favorite rig is the Willys, I am lucky...or unlucky I guess, no one around me to crawl with no matter what the scale. I soon find it addicting detailing these bad boys up, it's endless with what you can do to them. That chassis is a nice start, real benefit to it is the ability to weld, braze, drill/tap into it if needed. Much easier for sure. Looking forward to another take on a classic , small niche, scaler. |

With a title like "Harley's Willys" I was apprehensive to open this thread. I fear the day BD starts a similar thread... |

What I am always surprised to see is people using 3/16" tube instead of 1/4". The 3/16" looks a little small to me most of the time.

Yeah, 3/16" tube scales out to 1.125", no way I'd personally use that. 1/4" tube is a better choice imo. I'm excited about all the scale accessories and how realistic you can make these 1/6 builds look. I wish I had started mine years ago also.

I had some 5.75" tall tires, but didn't want to cut my rear fenders to get the articulation I wanted. So I opted for some TSLs. They scale out to 33's and are a near perfect fit into the rear fender when they're stuffed. Not great pictures, but you get the idea. It's awesome to hear the lugs suffering under the weight of this thing as they claw for traction. |
