| CP RC PROJECT - Picture Heavy Build Thread
Not sure if this is the correct area to post this one, but it is large, so it seemed fitting. I was tasked to build up an RC vehicle for work. We originally started off with a Traxxas Summit, and we added some 1:1 vehicle gear to it. The idea being that it was (at first) for an in house company trade show for my division. To get our teams "thinking outside the box" as it were, to get our creative juices flowing. But it has now become more like a mascot for our division. It attends many big events all over North America. It had items like a Monster Clarity audio system. Compustar CM6300 2-way alarm system with Drone GPS module. The alarm system also kills the positive feed to the 550 motor that drives the truck when it is armed. But this was all done originally under the stock Summit lexan body in all of about 8 hours. But we had BIG plans for this rig though, and here is the build of Phase 2 of the CP RC Project! Sorry, a lot of the build photos are from a camera phone. I'll let the pictures do most of the talking, just let me know if I miss anything important. Last edited by clubconcepts; 05-31-2012 at 09:45 AM. |

Switched out Traxxas RX to a Dension WiRC RX. This RX allows you to drive the vehicle using an Android / iOS smartphone or Tablet. It creates it's own WiFi network and also has a webcam that feeds video back to the control device. So you can see what the truck sees! It actually pretty good. range is a little lacking, but fun to get the FPV view in real time. Then built an upper a deck out of ABS and rivets, and 3mm cap screws to secure to chassis. Then added all the gear to the deck. Compustar CM6300 2way alarm and Drone module, with mini siren. Starter kill relay for motor kill when armed. And shock/impact sensor. Monster Clarity audio system with remote harness for controls. Some build notes here: The alarm / drone are 12vdc. The Summit runs on 14.4vdc. Had to switch out for 6 cell packs. Also had to really dig around the ESC to find a constant 12vdc feed. Added 50amp dual pole master kill switch to shut off main batteries so we could charge without pulling the body off. Also a Neutrik "Speakon" 8 conductor connector was used to facilitate charging. The Speakon connector held the two feeds from the Duratrax twin battery charger, as well as a feed for the three on borad USB devices that all needed to be charged. Again, all without having to disconnect anything on the chassis, or remove the body. Had to modify the Monster Clarity so I could control with body on. Custom Molex connectors here. Had a little bit of wiring to do......... Last edited by clubconcepts; 04-14-2012 at 09:25 PM. |

Now onto the body. Now I looked for ages all over the web for anyone popping lexan or styrene GMC Savanna or Chey Express bodies. As you probably guessed, no one does. So, I pulled out a body I had been sitting on for 5 years or so for a project one day...........and it almost fit........ And now on with the cutting and filling, and sanding, and sanding and sanding............ Dominion sure seal "rigid filler" for the major body work, then followed up with some "icing" filler..... |

Then some wiring on the body: Amber park lights front & rear to facilitate light flash for the alarm for arm/disarm/trigger. Headlights, roof fog lights and tail lights LCD key chain picture frames were flush fit into the roof for a little video aspect to the model. Red LED to glow when the main power switch is enabled. And the blue LED for the alarm status LED. The included webcam for the RX system And buttons! Lots of buttons! To turn on/off the video screens. And control power/mute/volume up & down for the monster clarity sound system. Then custom harnesses and connectors to connect all of that back to the chassis, but be easily removable when the body is pulled off. Sorry, really bad pic. I will replace with a better set once the model comes back from Toronto next week. Last edited by clubconcepts; 04-14-2012 at 09:27 PM. |

And once the body was completed and mounted and had decals applied, I had to modify a flight case I used to have to carry Par38 lights. Now some 2" wide velcro tie downs that are bolted into the case hold the big girl down during transport. Two compartments for the charger and accessories. Road Trip! After approx 65 hours of build time, now the POSER SHOTS! Its a great advertising tool / mascot for us. You can drive the truck and see what the truck sees, play music via blutooth all from a tablet or smartphone. Have your fav photos on display. And arm the alarm, or track your vehicles location on a map from your smart phone from anywhere in the world! Cheers! Last edited by clubconcepts; 04-14-2012 at 09:31 PM. |

It was "Painter's Touch" from Home Depot, the base coats were great, and cheap. But when I used the same brand of clear coat, I had a reaction and parts of the body had to be repainted & cleared. So I am never using it in the future again for a project like this. Next one I am going to try the Duplicolor stuff from CT. |

Great idea for a marketing tool, much cheaper (and better built) than a custom chopper! The body work came out really great, from the pic you would never know the body didn't start out as a 2 door. |

I used duplicolor stuff. I like the colors. But I used rustolium primer and the paint bubbled.
