Thanks, I've seen this one before, and it really is amazing, the link worked to get me to the page, but the video on the page wouldn't work, but it's not a problem because I did see it before.

There's another one in Germany, built by 2 brothers, that's equally beautiful, that a co-worker sent to me a couple years ago.

The vision, skill, electrical and computer knowledge, as well as the expense it take to put one of these layouts together is overwhelming. Truly beautiful!

The video was on my Facebook page a couple of days ago

So it might be dead now, I did watch vidoe

I like the 40 foot expansion bridge and the coal train with like 30 cars on it

One of my Uncles has scale trains and a bunch of them are the Pennsylvania Rail Road trains

And the landscape matches the real places in PA

The Detail level is crazy, I used to have some pictures of his trains and his layout

those massive train layouts are insane.

And I thought the set up at my LHS was cool

meh... it still is actually
just not that big 'cuz it has to fit inside a tiny store. Lol

https://youtu.be/TMXfeAzxchY

https://youtu.be/IMuMTC7YLr4

Was purdy cool to watch it being built.
crazy how much coin was spent on building this one

I can't even imagine what's invested in those massive layouts

Well Accucraft is taking their damn sweet time producing live steam engines, and I got tired of waiting. So I contacted Jason, from The Train Department, in New Jersey, and purchased a Roundhouse Sammie. It arrived today. I have a few detail items I want to install, as well as still needing to purchase the distilled water and butane needed to fire it up,(which I will do this weekend).

I'll get a video up once I find my dad's tripod, as last time I did a video, it was suggested I use one.

I steamed it up for the first time this evening, made a couple mistakes, only had a 10-12 min runtime. 2nd steam up, went much better, got a 23 minute run. Every steamup will be a different experience, but it will also be breaking in the steam chests and valves for a smoother, and longer run each time. Max run time for this boiler and the fuel tank is 25-35 minutes.

At some point in time, I'll be adding a servo to the throttle. Chasing after the engine to adjust it got old quick, although maybe it'll settle down once it gets past the break-in period.

Playing in the snow at +2 F

When I cleaned the tracks, I wasn't aware of ice buildup in certain spots, so the video ends where the ice stopped the engine. By the time I chipped the ice off the tracks and started to record again, the battery in my iphone died.

That's awesome Mike even at that temp. Thing cooks along the track and the steam trail is killer.

Finally got some cooler weather here in Chicagoland, so got the steamer out for a run, first time since 12/26/17. This is only a clip, it ran for 17 minutes: https://vimeo.com/291316186?utm_sour...campaign=29220

Man that thing is cool!

It's kinda mesmerizing. I'd just sit there with a cup of coffee and vape and watch it run around and around...

One of these days I got to put out some of the scenery. My wife built a very nice, detailed Farm scene and a Blacksmith shop. I told her maybe we can do it this weekend if the weather is nice, I'd like to see the farm covered in snow this year.

Yes, please That looked like a very cool setup, obviously a lot of effort went into the layout. Was that a covered bridge that didn't seem to be in use?

No sir, That red building you see in the distance is a car barn. To keep from dragging different cars in and out of the garage when I want to run the trains, I built a shed that houses the most used rolling stock. The engine is actually running on a track behind the car barn. If you go back to page 9, post 162, you'll see the modified layout. On the second, third, and fourth photos, you can see a siding area. That area is where the car barn is.

Is the rail wearing on the curves ,, a small amount of lube on inside rail will help,, I worked for the UPRR for 30+ years and seen flange oilers that did the same job using grease.

I've never really noticed. This track has been in use since around 1993, and was originally DC powered rail. I've only had the steamer since May 2017. I check the gauge annually, to avoid derailments, because it stays outside in the elements, and the more common problem with that is that the rails will separate at the joiners.

For those that don't know, "checking the gauge" is making sure the width or gap between the parallel rails is equal all the way around the layout. If it's too wide or too narrow, the engine will drive itself off the rails. The LGB track that I use has plastic ties that are UV resistant, but I have occasionally found broken ties, which if there are enough in a row, will warrant replacement of a track section. Since I've elevated the layout off the ground, it's been maybe 5-6 years since I've had to replace a section of track.
