My 1/6 scale wil... Uh FJ40!!! Different eh?

Thought i would take a different route since everyone was building jeeps, and despite how much i like the look, i am a toyota guy / jeep recoverer!

I started with the willy platform, and was tired of seeing jeep after jeep build, as much as i do like seeing them and getting ideas. My next project is a full scale H1 hummer 1/6. But for now, the fj40.
They are surprisingly very similar platforms, the biggest noticeable major difference being the hood and grill.

Its going to be a long build as i have a newborn in the house, but i have some ideas for scale details to come in the future, and welcome any and all suggestions, how to's, tips and tricks or links to potential supplies. Pics are a huge help as well!

My biggest want/need is a place to get plastic sheets or like a plastic filler. As of right now, im using what i have scrap-wise to make sheets or trusses. I use ambroid proweld for all my plastic model builds, as it melts/welds plastic. Together permanently, which is awesome. I strongly recommend it if you have not tried it. I know hobby town carries it for sure but check your lhs for same or similar stuff.

Well heres what i have thus far.
Thanks in advance! "thumbsup"

So the two plates on either side of the transfer case are not actually bolted to the cross brace. They are just perfectly cut and fitted to the slot to where the body actually holds it snugg.

I have seen some guys reenforce the main frame channel with solid? Or channeled aluminum? And, is it truly needed? I have not seen a major need to do it yet, but we'll see how she fares wheeling.

The chassis part is actually really easy, but the steering linkages have kinda aggrivated me a bit. Needs reenforcing and possible repositioning. The biggest parts will be the FJ details... Thats where ill have to do the most work.

Interesting, looking forward to the completed project. Are you planning on making the whole hardtop?

Re: My 1/6 scale wil... Uh FJ40!!! Different eh?

The top of the hood more towards the front seems to be quite the challenge that material experience that anyone has may be useful. I have to make the front lip of the hood dam, and potentially slope the angle of the hood down a bit more towards the front. The ridges down the middle will be more filled in, and ill probably end up using bondo unless someone has a suggestion or recommendation for another material.

Re: My 1/6 scale wil... Uh FJ40!!! Different eh?

I have another jeep body that has the flat bottom (no detachable underframe) that i was going to make a hard top. Blue and white top on that one. Personally, i dont like how flippin tall the fj is, let alone the jeep builds i have seen with the cage that sticks up past the windshield. I was actually going to make a bucket seat shoulder high, and actually crop the seat bottom on the chassis pan to sit it lower overall. Metal fabbed seat covered and padded. But this one is getting a full cage in it. Angled back, not like the fj top looks, angled down on the back half.

Have you thought about making a baby trailer or something similar to attach to the FJ40?

Yeah, I was going to use the same trailer like I have seen, only load it with leaf springs and make it kinda like a pop tent trailer kinda thing. That will come after, or I may do it in the middle haha

what is the basis for the body? are you using a 1/6 gi joe jeep or the british one?

Re: My 1/6 scale wil... Uh FJ40!!! Different eh?

It's a has bro jeep. I seem to be noticing a needed change in how the fender line is different on the fj vs the jeep... kinda narrows a bit more on the fj. ..

correct, wraith axles and rc4wd center diff. its not even bolted down on the chassis, but when the top body is on it, there is no play what so ever. i didnt want it screwed down for some reason, and it just worked well. im having trouble finding a place that has sheets of the same type of plastic that these jeeps are made out of. any thoughts or ideas? the main sheets i have found are more of an abs style plastic that isnt working the same with my solvents. this is my biggest dilema at the moment. everything else is hanging around that.

Styrene sheets should fit your bill, the early Hasbro Jeep 60's-70's, like mine, I had no problem gluing the styrene to it using Testors model cement.
