Right there on the firewall seems to be the most appropriate place for it. That's where I put mine.

That seems like a ready made spot and the battery fits perfect, but I worry about so much weight forward. Not that it's a bad thing... |

Outstanding work. I had the same concerns as you, so I mounted the battery against the rear wall and built a "tool box" to cover it with. |

dadrab has a good idea too, I was going to put a box in the back with a 9v and a couple switches for lights, and by the time I put some scale accessories back there, it should balance out the weight of the battery up front. My concern with the battery on the firewall is: is the weight too high to affect center-of-gravity? For now, I'll run it as planned, and deal with high COG as it rears its ugly head

Yea, not opposed to putting it in the back. When I made the gear shift lever the on/off switch for my orange one, I moved the battery back to the tailgate, under the spare. I have a three inch speaker in the engine compartment for the sound chip and it was kind of a pain to have the battery in there as well. Not much progress this week, but I did have a little fun making a fan blade. I don't know if I will keep it on, but it was a fun distraction anyway. |

I hate running out of parts. While waiting for new parts drop from the mail lady, I stumbled into this. Missing a windshield and a steering wheel, fuel can and a shovel... $26 bones. I swear it's a sickness, but how could a I pass it up. Last edited by THX_138; 07-19-2015 at 08:04 AM. |

Hey Bitter, what gauge and type of metal did you skin your Scrap Metal build with?, I went back through the thread, and there wasn't any mention of it. Also, how did you attach them?

I just ran down to the shop and took a measurement... Looks like .032 I took some extra time to make sure the radius was as close as I could get it to try and eliminate any gappage, then applied some industrial 3m double sided tape, well it actually comes in a sheet. I kept part of the backing paper in place and got the panels as close as I could (position wise) then slipped the backing paper out. A little gentle heat with the heat gun (too warm might warp it) and that was it. The 3M tape is still holding the panels firmly in place. | |

This week I tried to add a bit of uniformity to the underside, then I put it all back together after it thoroughly dried. My micro servos finally arrived so next up will be the steering wheel assembly. |

All of the GI Joe jeeps that I have picked up have been missing the fuel can bracket. I thought I would give fabricating one a whirl with some .080 styrene. I made a template from some much thinner .015, trying to make it out of just one piece. I have read that styrene bonds to styrene well, but my experience with it is very limited, and largely untested. So I got it roughed into shape... I wrapped the styrene around the can and put the heat gun to it, shrinking most of the gaps and making a very tight grip around the can. I did end up with a gap on the backside that I had to fill with a strip, but after a liberal dose of solvent it bonded nicely. Here is a snap of it's final placement. You can also see that I added a small bracket moving the spare tire up just a bit. With the over-sized tire, it was crowding the rear bumper. |

I got the steering servo mounted as well as finding a home for the LED assembly. I routed two 3mm LED to each side of the instrument panel and glued them in place (in the photo you can see I have a couple of small pieces of servo tape over them holding them in place while the glue dries). The LED's to four lights up front were easy peasy, but the wires are woefully short going aft. I'll have to order some extentions or just solder in the extra wire to make the reach. I ran the linkage (read; home brew coat hanger) up through the OEM steering column, attaching the linkage to the wheel at the top. |

A buddy of mine who is into old Jeeps was telling me about bed frame roll bars way back in the day. So I thought I would give the throw back roll bar a go. I think I like it! Last edited by Bitter End; 05-14-2016 at 09:10 PM. |

I'm inching closer to the end on this one. The side mirror has been driving me crazy, sticking straight out I was sure it would look better pulled in at a different angle so I cut it off and added a button head screw. Fully rotatable, much better. I also tore down another driver and gave him the neck servo and loose arm joint treatment. The head and tail lights are installed and wired up as well and crossed off my to-do list! . |

To hold the hood down on this one I cut off the oem hood latch and made it semi functional. If it doesn't work out I will build a custom spring loaded one like I built for the orange one. One of the last things on my list is a couple of lap belts to hold the driver and passenger in place so they don't get thrown out climbing or during a roll over. This weekend I'll get it out for a maiden voyage, with any luck all the smoke will stay put and not escape! |

Well I didn't get a chance to run it outside to work out any bugs, but I did get the driver and copilot finished with articulating heads so I'm jazzed about that! With both Jeeps finished I can turn my attention back to the scale garage without the nagging pull of these projects. |
