Willy's Jeep with a Wraith Skid Plate

After seeing marangua's thread using a shortened Wraith skid plate I though I would give it a whirl with a full size plate. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/large...-approach.html

I will be heading off on a road trip in a couple of days so I may seem like the progress is slow, but I''m going to try to get the links built before I have to leave.

I stripped the frame off and cut off anything I thought wold get in the way. I filled the hollow frame rails with Epoxy and leveled it off.

The skid plate is just a bit wide for this frame, but a little nip and tuck here and there and she slipped right into place.

Re: Willy's Jeep with a Wraith Skid Plate

That would be the stock plastic chassis that unscrews from the underside of the Hasbro Willy's.

Bought one today that already had a wraith conversion. I'll get some detailed pics of how he attached it.

I made a couple of brackets/spacers to mount the transfer case.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-A...litary_001.jpg

Bolted an filed them together to get two of the same size.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-N...litary_002.jpg

The spacers were just a little wide so I added a bit of a recess to fit over the corresponding part of the skid plate.

My first attempt at making a hinge.

After a coat of Olive Drab I think it will be just right.

Thanks, me too! I think it really looks clean, I kind of wish I had used this Hasbro when I built the orange one http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/large...rap-metal.html. There is sooo much more detail in this Hasbro compared to the Ultimate Soldier.

As soon as I decide what route to go with the rear suspension I'll have a roller! I'm trying to leave the body as whole as possible with a minimum amount of carnage that I'll have to repair/hide later. I have the motor/trans ready to mount and the drive line to the transfer case ready to install. It's almost time to get a radio and receiver on the way.

Re: Willy's Jeep with a Wraith Skid Plate

ya, the problem with the older Hasbro Jeeps is the area on the front of the body( engine bay) about 3/4 in on each side that has to be cut out in order for the tires to be able to turn lock to lock. If you look at my build, post #8 , you see the plastic from the engine bay that sticks out into the fenderwells, and in post # 15 with it removed. Now that I have the engine bay figured out, I can go back and add styrene as needed to create a smooth fenderwell that won't interfere with the steering. The Dragon, 21st Century, and the 2002 Hasbro Willy's appear to have the smooth wheelwells. If you go to patchesofpride.com, they show the 4 different G.I. Joe Jeeps. The post-60's GI Joe Jeeps have more detail, mine is more of a toy.

I've got the chassis just about where I want it. I'll wait to see what the final weight of it is before I decide on the final shock length, She is riding kind of high but I'll use this mock up for now.

The front shock towers are hanging in mid air, will they be attached to a frame extension?, or are they sturdy enough the way they are? from the pics, it looks like the rear strut is attached to the frame, but the front is not attached.

Magic! Na, it will bolt to the body. Here is a snap I took while trying out different shocks, a little out of position but you get the idea.

Well like most of you I'm sure, it's been a little cold out in the shop recently with all the climate change blowing in from the great white north!

Here's a quick update:

I used a piece of delrin as a platform to mount the motors, trans and steering servo.

Now here's the best part, and the part that I have been waiting for, for a very long time! The chassis (with the original mounting system) mated back together with the body.
