Crawler Innovations, Szczerba Built, & JWalker Designs Willys Build

1 Attachment(s)
I acquired this Willys from Rowdy Racing earlier this year in a trade:

Attachment 331772

Once I got it on the rocks it was clear that this rig was cool. It's been used in a couple random Crawler Innovations video for the most part as is. Rowdy Racing had acquired it from someone else and no one really knows the history on this particular rig. It'd be nice to know just in case the original builder finds this thread.

CI's turn in line for the Szczerba Built Shop came up and this rig is up for a complete make over. Something in the Crawler Innovations theme and colors. As well something that will hold up to the CI family of drivers. Once Szczerba Built is done with it, it goes to JWalker Designs for paint, body, and blue tooth speaker system.

For the most part, the willys needed nothing. It arrived ARTR with basically 2.2 sportsman competition axles under it. The axles had already been XR10 width modded and had over and under gears in it which caused intermittent engagement in the transfer case. Never the less, the Willys was fun to drive.

Thanks, just hacking it together as a I go. The subframe and upperlink mounts were a compromise of ground clearance an link separation at the chassis. Didn't want to cut the floor of the body for upper link mounts and I didn't want a tall subframe. The weight of the rig should make it crawl just fine. "thumbsup"

More work with janky welding.

Transfer case can be removed after taking skid off.

Frame mounts to body with 8 screws/nuts.

Used heavy materials due to the CI extreme driving habits.

Not much this evening as the gas solenoid on my welder is going out and using more gas. Been having to turn the bottle off manually. Tank is almost empty anyways.

Simple c-channel rear bumper.

ummm

but what are those upper shock mounts secured to ?

metal shock tower's behind the plastic of the body - inner fender well ?

Don't say "just the body plastic" !?

more detail please
before I call it less then ideal !? Lol/jk

Szczerba 01-13-2016 06:11 AM

Re: Crawler Innovations, Szczerba Built, & JWalker Designs Willys Build

The shock mount has three points of attachment to the 1/8" thick inner fender. There is no concern on it failing, the plastic is too thick and the shock mount has three points of attachment on 2 planes.

edit, I can see your concern now. I didn't have the two top mount screws screwed in in the picture I posted. lolz

Don't sell the plastic body short- my rear upper shocks only go through the body with a nut on the backside ( inside of the jeep body, where the rear seat goes), it hasn't failed yet.

Yup, nice and thick 1/8" plastic or so.

I'll be doing something similar for my TJ

well except the part of removing body material
to open the rear wheel well(s) rearward like yours.

...cool
but I can't come to terms with permanently altering my body.

Thanks. Nothing too special, just following the body lines. Front bumper helped the overall look too I think.

I'm liking this build. I have a couple of large scale jeep builds. One I'm completely re building so that performance is unmatched. The tires I'm using are the Rock Beast XL that just came out. It uses a 16'' wheelbase.
It will be fun to see what level of performance yours will be at. The scale it top notch.

Back on it.

Chopped all but the front windshield hoop out.

It still has the willys "tallish" cage look but way less dramatic.
