Willys fever

First I want to share my first Willys build that I never made a thread for. I basically followed the most common build steps that most have used and made a few miner tweets. I used a 1:1 transfers case instead of the T case that most used. It's working ok, I do think the T case is a better choice. You can see it in action....

I just started a second build for a friend who had to have one after seeing mine. I am going to take a different approach with this one and incorporate what I learned on the first one. I'm a slow builder but, I will get there.

So I'm using a Wraith skid, the low profile and link mounts will be a benefit. The only draw back is, it is too long in my opinion. So I cut 7/8 out of the middle, fabricated a mount for the T case that also doubles to give structure back to the skid.

To hinge the hood I first slotted for the hinge





Then installed the hinge with M1.6 x 6mm screws. Then proceeded to cut the hood. This method insures that the hood will be perfectly aligned and work properly. The hood actually snaps closed and stays closed.

Very nice! Really enjoyed the video too of the orange Willys. That's a sharp looking Jeep.

I'm curious, I see guys use the internal spring-based (no oil?) RC4wd scale shocks. Since these aren't leaf-based builds, how do those shocks hold up to the weight? It doesn't seem like they would offer much support, yet you guys are having success with them?

I was sceptical at first but, they work well. I have mine set up so most of the travel is down to keep the tires planted. I do fill half with oil. You can get stiffer springs, I have them in the rear so they don't sack out on hill climbs. I could have lowered the shock position but, didn't want to leave an unused hole.

Thank you very much! Did you go with 100mm or 90mm on the shocks?

100mm up front and 90mm in the rear. I am having a bit of binding with the Junfac drive shaft up front when fully extended. I know Race730 changed to 90mm up front to keep the front down and was able to climb a crazy steep rock hill. It's on his YouTube channel.

Hey Rob, is that a Mill, or a Drill Press with a sliding mill vise?, and if it is the latter, where did you find the sliding vise?

It's a $79 bench drill press from eBay and I mounted this to it

Works decent for small parts, way more accurate then hand grinding parts. Lol I've cut up to 1/8" aluminium, you just have to cut slow. I'm sure I'll have to replace the main bearing at some point because they are not designed for side load but they are relatively cheap. I wish I had done this sooner.




I also wired up that $10 led light. Nice low budget setup!

Creating a spot for the servo.

The servo location on the orange jeep works great steering and suspension cycles perfect. I think it can improve this on the new build. I moved the servo towards the rear and as closer to the end of the chassis as possible. This will give more clearance for the servo arm and longer panhard and steering link. This Will keep the axle more centered as it cycles.

Next will be cage and paint. Waiting on SSD to release the spline mod for the D60 axles, hopefully late February, got that from the last email response. Almost forgot.... still have to install the R2 trans. I am leaning on 90mm shocks up front. As Race730 proved they help keep the front down on hill climbs. The video still blows me away, of course there is good driving skills involved

Thanks man, I should have been lol. I'm a general contractor but I've built some crazy stuff. I also used to own a countertop fabrication shop and those skills have come in handy for this hobby.
