Yeah Baby

Check this out, my 1/6th scale 21st Century Jeep Mutt, has almost the same chassis profile as my 1/6 scale Dragon Jeep

They have the same wheel base or close enough, the Body of the Jeep Mutt is a little bit wider

So I could cut a set of rails for the Dragon, that match the plastic chassis profile

And maybe make a second set, for the Mutt the same, and I can maybe grind and file the profile closer to the Mutt profile

I can use the SCX10 axles for the Dragon, and my AR60 Wraith axles for Jeep Mutt and four link both of them

And use a motor forward mount and a transfers case in each of them

I'm glad I bought the Dragon, cause now I see how to build the Mutt

Cause I figured out the transmission and the transfer case for the Mutt then stopped

So if I go buy 2 3'' or 4'' wide x 24'' long 1/8 steel plate, I can get 2 rail per piece

And for $20 worth steel plate, I can get four chassis rails cut out

That's the plan, I might be able to get away with 3'' inch wide plate and still get 2 rails per piece of plate

I'm not sure how much material the plasma cutter eats, when it cuts, 2 pieces right next to each other

So 3'' wide plate gives me a buffer zone, 2'' wide plate is not leaving much room for an error

4'' wide plate would waste a lot of material

Yeah baby

There both coming together nicely

I just thought about it, you know much easier the Chassis for 1/6th scale Humvee would of been if I used the Plasma cutter

Cause I cut out 2 set of rails with a jigsaw and grinded and filed by hand for days, only to find the first of rails were wrong, then cut a second set

I could saved a lot of time, a lot of effort, and done them right the first time and not need to grind and file them

I'm using the Plasma cutter this time around

And its on

How much material does a plasma cutter eat when it cuts

for Example a skill saw takes a 1/8'' of Kerf between cuts

So maybe I can get away with 3'' wide plate and still get 2 rails per piece of plate

I did some research and read a CNC Plasma Cutter has a Kerf of 1/8'' so I will have to adjust my layout

So that means, if I leave a little over a 1/4'' to 3/8'' in between pieces, it can cut one at a time

I think, I need to ask the Welding Instructor to make sure that's right, cause he can also offset the cutter to compensate for the Kerf

Cause I want them to come out right and do it once and cut all four rails at one time

Need to ask for help how to due this

They got rid of the band saw that was in the machine shop at the college

And using a jigsaw sucks, so its the plasma cutter and have some one help me

Mr Eastwood talked to the Welding Instructor and called in a favor

Cause I was the only student that helped service the machines, CNC and manual machines

And I learned by hands on experience, what none of the other people learned

And had fun doing it, cause I did mind getting dirty and jumped right in

Mr Eastwood is now retired and bored out of his mind

He finally got time to be with his wife

And he told its sucks cause she never leaves him alone

Poor bastard, I miss bullshitting with him

He is good people and I will call him from time to time

And give him shit cause he loves it

Got a question

Ace Hardware has 1/8'' x 2'' x 4 ft Aluminum plate for like $ 7.00 a piece

My question is 1/8'' Aluminum plate rigid enough to make chassis rails out of ??

Or would I have double the Aluminum plate ??

To get the same rigidity as 1/8'' steel plate and not have to double it

I read online the Plasma Cutter can cut Aluminum cleanly

I'm thinking the steel plate is maybe the better choice

What do you guys think ??

I keep my Pay Pal empty, its supposed to go right from my Wells Fargo

It didn't, it got kicked out and cancelled my order

So My order on August 16th was never processed, when I called today

I was told to re-order from the website

And to use a credit card and should be ok

Going to re-order cause I need it for the Dragon

I played around with the SCX10 axles and some leaf springs

They might work if you had the right width of chassis

I made rear shock mounts for my GCM 4 Ten chassis that attach to the chassis and the shocks are straight up and down, instead of them being mounted at a angle between the cross brace and rear end

They did not seem to work to good mounted that way

And I broke 2 of the 2mm rods that attach to the 70mm MRC shocks and use 2mm ball studs

One of the little rods split where it threads onto the shock shaft

The other little rod end broke where the 2mm ball stud goes into

Now I need to find some 2mm rods ends that are threaded 1mm maybe, the shaft on these 70mm shocks is pretty small

I hope I don't have to buy a set of shocks just to get 2 rod ends

Does anybody know where to find threaded 2mm rod ends to fix my shocks

I'm done, I turned one of my SXC10 into Wroncho with AR60 axles and a SCX10 skid plate

I had a problem with the drive shafts binding on the upper links

So I used the curved rod ends, I had from my Wraith and put the upper links on the out side of the frame

And used a spacer the rear drive shaft does bind

Tthe front drive shaft does not bind either, but I lost a lot suspension compressing cause the upper links are now hitting the chassis

But I don't like cause, now the front axles is not center wheel well

And its looks like shit and cant't use 2.2 cause they would rub on the body

I will just used the AR60 axles with the Jeep Mutt

I'm thinking, I could use these, Shock lowerings plate from my Wraith

Or make ones different to move the upper links up

I like the plates you made, but the way you have your top links is why you're hitting the frame rails. you'll need to get little longer links and put a bend in them so they clear the rails and run parallel to them before bolting to the outer rail.

You might also try flipping the skid so the outdrives are on the opposite side of the axle inputs, so you lose driveshaft bind.

Mike

I did not make the black plates in the picture above, they are a shock lowering kit, I bought for my Wraith and took them off when I parted out my Wraith

I did filp the skid plate, so the transmission output shafts are on the same side as the input shafts on the axles

If not the drive shafts bind even more and the Mip shafts are too short, so you have to flip the skid plate

The Axial Wild Bore deive shafts are long enough too work

I found a picture of some simple rises that some else made, but like the clean simple design

I will make a four of them and go to KCRC and buy some curved rod ends the right lenght or new links

And get the wheel base dialed in again with the AR60 axles on my Honcho

I will use the SCX10 axles on Jeep Mutt with some wheel widerners or some of the longest SLW hubs I can find

I will have a better starting point once my chassis rails are cut out

Default Re: Just pulled the trigger on a Dragon

It's good I get pissed off and get motivated and get shit done

I own 2 sets of the Losi MRC 70mm shocks, that is the size that GCM calls out for my 4 Ten chassis

So I bought some and they suck, cause the use 2mm ball ends and the shock shaft is like 1mm or smaller

And 2 of the shock rod ends broke, and I can not find replacement 2mm rod ends that are threaded with 1mm or what ever thread the Losi shock shafts are

So I called Losi Tech support sat on hold for over an hour and when the asshole from Losi finally comes on

He tells the MRC shocks are discontinued and both the LOSB 1441 the rebuild kits and the LOSB 1438 the upgrade kit are gone and good luck finding any

Cause one kit comes with 2 new rod ends and the other kit had 4 rod ends, I could fixed my problem and have extra's

I then asked, if they know if some else, who makes the special rods and got laughed at and that really pissed me off

I then said the shocks were worthless to me and anybody else who own them, since you can't rebuild them or get parts

I got laughed at me again and what really pissed me off the Asshole suggested I buy

Another complete set of 4 shocks at 50 some dollars too get the rod ends I needed

And when I asked if the new shocks, had rebuild kits or parts, and never got answer

By this time, I'm done and just about had enough and starting to really lose it

If I could of reached thru the ****ing phone, I would of beat his ****ing smart ass for him

So I used a extra set of 90 mm SCX10 shocks and took the dual stage springs off

And used the mounting holes on the axles cause there farther apart and could use a longer shock, instead of leaf spring mounts and 70mm shocks that GCM says to use

I like the SCX10 shocks alot better cause they use the normal 3mm hardware

Like this setup way better and the rear shocks work better

Than at angle on the crossmember and axle

Cause they never worked right, the rear shock mounts on the chassis fixed my problem

Yeah baby

I'm glad I kept, the part tree's from my kit builds

Cause I was able to find enough short curved rod ends

And they are the right lenght cause they shorted the wheel base

It's is now back to 12'' and looks better

I also changed out the 100mm Wraith shocks, cause they were to tall and there was a little too much sloppy flex and it flexed under throttle

To fix it, I put the Proline 90mm SCX10 shocks back on and that fixed the sloppy flex under throttle

I like that, I can use 1.9'' tires or 2.2'' tires with out having to trim the body

It kinda looks funny with the 1.9'' cause the axles are so wide, So maybe I will go with some 2.2''

So I can have one of each a 1.9'' with SCX10 axles and a 2.2'' with AR60 axles

Need to make my link riser plates and see if fixes my binding problem

I need to buy some stiffer foams and some wheel weights

With the right foams these 2.2'' Proline Badlands will be bad ass

Cause there just a little taller than my 1.9'' XL TSL Swampers and a bit wider also

It looks better with the 2.2'' beacuse of the Wraith axles

I went and talked to the Welding Instructor at the college and using the CNC plasma cutter is not going to happen

They do have a freehand/hand held plasma cutter and the instructor will cut cut out my rails for me

It cost me $13 and some change for 2 pieces of 1/8'' x 3'' x 24'' steel plate

I hope I don't have too much grinding to clean the up

I'm going to meet him the welding shop tomorrow morning

So that's a good start

I went back to the welding shop and tried to transfer the chassis to rails and its a pain in the ass and not very good

So I went to Wally World and got a 2 foot cardboard box from one of the stockers

And I'm going to make a couple card board templates and then transfer the chassis to metal plate

This is harder then I thought it was going to be

But still better than using a jig saw and a shitload of grinding and filing

Today I polished a turd

I took an old gas bbq and took the base off it

And turned it into a cart for my Miller Wire feed welder

I might look for some wheels later

Its not pretty but it will do the job for now

It was not out of anger the BBQ mets its fate

It was the fact that Wasps had built a 3 or 4 big nests inside of it and a couple underneath in the back

And also in my newer gas bbq, they had some more nests and the bbq covers are shit, they still get inside

You get the a scary surprise, every time you fire up the grill or reach under to turn on the propane tank

They were starting to get aggressive and were trying to sting Me and my dogs, I didn't like that

So the Wasps pissed me off, so they had to go, I armed myself and cowboyed up

I flipped the lid open and it was on and we did a liitle 2 step

I used a can oven cleaner in each hand, and sprayed them, so there wings foamed up and they drop to the ground and then stomp there asses

And a fly swatter kicks there ass also, then I got some Wasp killer in a spray can that kills on contact, I use it for the nest and when there in a group

So there is a method to my madness and now I got a welder cart and rid of a bunch of Wasps and bbq going is going in the recycled metal pile at the dump

And put the newer bbq in my garage, I will just roll it out and roll it back in when I want to use it, and that will keep the Wasps out of my bbq and no more surprises when I open it

Cause even with a cover they were still getting inside or building nests under the bbq

So that ends that problem, when I bought the Wasp Killer, I got a 2 foot card box from one of the stockers at Wally World, they will give cardboard boxes if you ask

I have gotten alot of boxes from Wally World over the years

Much better now, that I got rid of them and did not get stung, I had a few fly pretty close to my face but I move ass and spray and stomp and it took awhile, I got most of them

I bought the oven cleaner for a dollar a can at the dollar store and bought enough to do the job

I traced and cut out, 2 card board templates of the Dragon chassis

One of each side of the chassis, so I can do my lay out of the chassis rails on the plate

As the welding instructor asked me too do, so the rails come out right

So tommorrow I will do the lay out and hopefully there cut and come out nice

Yeah baby

Shit just got serious and its on

I went to Harbor Frieght and bought a 25,000 Rpm 1/4'' numatic die grinder and some air tool oil

I then went a weldeing supply store and bought a nice Germany quailty Carbide Burr, this thing is nice, I can use for alot of material beside metal

I got all four rails cut with the Plasma Cutter, its a small world, cause the guy that cut them out for me

I took Machining classes with him 5 years ago, is now the TA for the Welding classes and works for the college now

The rails need squared up and deburred there is still a lot slag on that needs to come
