1/6 Jeep Willys Body

I am contemplating a large scale build based off of a 1/6 Jeep Willys. Which brand is the best base for this build? I don't know if certain models have more structural integrity, etc.

Thank you.

I'll give my opinion...

An early 2000's Hasbro is a good start. The chassis can be used by cutting away all the fake drivetrain/axles and filling the hollow frame rails with aluminum stock for strength and to give you good metal to drill/tap for link mounts etc.

Unfortunately they are becoming scarce. Keep your eye on eBay and Craigslist and be patient. I've seen two on eBay lately but the seller claims they are pre-production prototypes from the Hasbro designers personal collection thus he thinks they are worth about 4-5 times more than they actually are. 🙄

Another good candidate is Dragon's 1/6th model kit. If you want to keep it military this kit comes with all the goodies: axe, shovel, etc. but I've heard the plastic is more brittle than a Hasbro. Being built as a toy rather than a collectible static model, the Hasbro plastic is pretty tough...

Same opinion here. The Hasbro versions from 2000- 2004 (?) are the most popular for converting into an RC vehicle. I like the version from 21st Century, the bodies are a bit wider and closer to a true 1/6th scale. Full width Wraith axles fit very nicely under neath, the same axles push the tires outside of the body a bit on the Hasbro version.

Those 3 mentioned above are the way to go, The 2000-2003 Hasbros, Dragon, and 21st Century models have the most detail, and look the most like the CJ-2A WWII models. You'll pay a bit more for the 21st Century Jeeps, I've seen some between $150-200. The Hasbro's I've seen between $40-100, and the Dragon kits start at $99, but you can purchase them brand new from Dragon Models

The early Hasbro G.I. Joe Jeeps were produced between 1964 to 1975, and have G.I. Joe 7000 painted on both sides of the hood. This Jeep has no real scale detail to it. I had built one of these, but, these can be had for as little as $5. These can easily sport Wheely King or AR-60 axles, with the fenders splitting the tires down the middle. These are also wider, and a tad longer than the other 3.

If you haven't seen it yet, Zoso has a sticky at the top of this section on how to build your 1/6 Jeep.

I'm building a Dragon at the moment and I'm close to abandoning the project. The plastic is very brittle and am afraid first big tumble and that's all she wrote. My Hasbro GI Joe Willys is one tuff jeep. I'll stick with Hasbro! Plus I have three of them one the self lol

Thanks for all of the input guys. I do not want a Dragon model kit as the body. It wouldn't survive me.

I ended up finding this 2003 Hasbro on eBay for $67 shipped. The only thing it appears to be missing is the windshield which I'm sure is the hardest part to find. Seemed liked a decent deal to me.

PM BigSki, I think he may be able to help you with a printed windshield frame, or point you in the right direction.

Thank you! I already did a search on Shapeways, but I didn't find anything.

I had the files on Shapeways, but Chrysler sent me a take down notice for copyright infringement. If you want the files, PM me your email address.

Just another reason to hate Chrysler. Thank you for the offer. I will PM you.

I don't understand how Chrysler can claim infringement on a 1940's Jeep, and a toy at that. The CJ-2a at the time was produced by Willys, Ford, or Kaiser

Re: 1/6 Jeep Willys Body

If the "Jeep" trademark name were utilized...
then that would explain it.

Chrysler owns the copyright/patent for the "Jeep" name.

Purdy much the same reason why Axial has to label their Toyota SCX-10
as an "Honcho" instead.
Because Toyota wants their cut.
And demands a licensing fee to utilize their name.

Axial refuses to pay licensing fees to Toyota...
But paid Chrysler for use of their "Jeep" trademark name.

Copyright infringements are often based on a word or title name.

And many of the historical names or titles still require licensing to use.
As the name or title may have been copyrighted/protected back in the day.

So... basically do your homework before selling your wares
using a particular name or title.

Re: 1/6 Jeep Willys Body

It had nothing to do with the name. They have a copyright on the seven slat design of the grill. They have been putting little grill logos all over Jeeps in recent years.

Then I should put my MB military grill up there, it has more than 7! "thumbsup"

Thanks for sending these guys copies of your files. My SW license has expired so I can't open my files, and since you were kind enough to send my your file, I wasn't about to send it out to anyone else.

Here she is. This will probably be a long project. It will be my first project that's not a kit so I'll have many hurdles to climb. I also have a fleet of other RCs that I drive and work on.

What axles did you guys use? As I'm doing research I'd love to hear opinions and see photos of your chassis and drivetrain.

Thanks.

Re: 1/6 Jeep Willys Body

If you look at Zoso's sticky at the top of the Large Scale section, as well as his video's, it appears that the guys running the later year Hasbro's, Dragon's and 21st Century are running SCX-10 axles, a few use the AR-60's for a wider stance.

I'm using AR-60's for mine, which is the earlier Hasbro G.I. Joe 7000 model. With Axial Rockster wheels, The fenders split the tires at the center seam.

I've seen some build threads where guys are running C/K, W/K axles.

I'm sure you may have done it already, but I spent an entire weekend, prior to building mine, to peruse all the build threads in the Large Scale section to get ideas on the build. Some are pretty cool, and one sticks out, and is good reading, check out Fumbles "Behind Enemy Lines" build"thumbsup"

SSD D60 axles with wide spline tubes, chubs, knuckles and HD CVD's panhard setup. Amazing!
