Default I am new and need help with jeep build

I love these 1/6 jeeps , I have been watching YouTube and this forum for a while. I have gotten a lot of good ideas and info here. I got a dragon jeep because of the detail. I think I will use crawler king axles, but I am not sure what is the best (strongest) transfer case and transmission for this build, as it will have a metal frame instead of plastic, so it will be on the heavier side, and I don't want to break drive line parts, (can you say bulletproof). So I was hoping you guys that have already built a jeep could give me some ideas on what you have found to be the best drive line parts, (so many choices).

PS, I will post pics

I think it depends on what motor you thinking of running, just keep in mind the Dragon will not hold up as the Hasbro, the plastic of the Dragon isnt flexible, so I think you should use a slow motor, if you take this route axial transfer cases are ok. Just get steel gears for them and a motor above 55t as this is heavy rig if you use a metal frame custom made.

There's a few good choices, the Axial transmission used as a T-case like mentioned above is strong. I've been beating on a disruptor T1 for a while with my heavy jeep without a single issue.

Thanks guys
Started on the frame today, cutting out pieces, this is going to be a challenge ! Was looking at the disruptor and the Axial or maybe a RC4WD R2, I want to put the motor and trans under the hood with a transfer case under the floor, more like the original set-up. It will be a crawler, so I'm looking for torque with moderate speed

Check out the Sticky at the top of the section, by Zoso, it'll give you some basic ideas, the rest you should be able to pick up from thumbing through the various builds in this section, Jeeps that are similar to yours.

Feel free to ask questions, most of us will help you along, and critique you if necessary , and most of all, have fun! and post lots of pics

Thanks Mike Flea, Zoso's drive train has everything I was considering using for my build, only difference will be the frame. I am going to replicate the dragon frame in steel, why ? because I can !

Everyone on here will chime in with the same advice in regards to the R2- don't waste your time or money. Those gear boxes were never designed to hold up to the weight of these large scale builds. I went through a few before I swapped in a bone stock AX-10 trans under the hood, complete with plastic gears and no slipper clutch. ( O.G. AX-10 !) Never had a single issue with that trans.

I bought a used R2 on here reasonable and bought the rebuild kit that comes with new gears

So now its like a brand new R2, what I like about is that you can change the output

By changing the number of teeth on the pinion gear, it will change the output ratio

I'm going to try a 4 to 1 ratio with 8 or 9 tooth, 32 tooth pitch pinion

Need to look at the input and output chart again to get the ratio I want

Not sure if I'm going to use the R2

Cause I could make 2 motor forward mounts and use SCX10 transmissions

Depends on the space under hoods on the Jeeps, cause there similiar body styles, but the underhood area's are different, I might need the R2, if not I will use SCX10 transmissions

I have both, a 6th scale Dragon Jeep and My 21st Century 6th scale Jeep Mutt, that I started

My first 6th scale build was a 21st Century Humvee and I used a Wraith transmission and skid plate and the AR60 axles

And made the chassis similiar to a SCX10, with shock loops on the chassis and kept it simple with out a motor forward plate and transfer case

Cause of the front of the Humvee body, a motor forward setup would not work

Axial SCX10 trans with Robinson Racing steel gears, Disruptor transfer case, MIP driveshafts. Powered by an old 10t Cobalt Puller from Holmes, I get excellent low speed control and enough torque and power to run faster than I can and pull big wheelies if the traction is there. Best-of-both-worlds motor. The only problems I encounter are occasionally twisting my homemade axles and the transfer case working loose if I don't check it once in a while.

I'd use a Robinson-stuffed Axial trans over the R2 any day. Smaller size and waaaay tougher. Just my .02

what are the OD/ID dimensions ?
square and rectangular ?

wall thickness ?

where is it found ?
