Willys Project

So I built a motorcycle (a real one) and didnt relaly like it since so many people suck at driving cars. That becomes REALLY evident when youre on a bike. So, I am gonna sell it and want to build a new 1:1 jeep. However, I have a lot of different ideas and wanted to try and get some of them out without a drastic cost problem I dont like the way it works. So, I am going to build a 1:6 scale willys based on the rough idea of what I want it to look like in 1:1 scale. Here are the humble beginnings...
Buy a 1:6 scale willys with a silly "custom paintjob" off ebay
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/06...s/DSCN0050.jpg
Cut it in half
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/06...s/DSCN0051.jpg
Cut off all hte extra junk you dont need
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/06...s/DSCN0052.jpg
Get rid of the horrible paintjob
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/06...s/DSCN0055.jpg
Then cut up some nylint tires to work and look like you want them to on maxx wheels
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/06...s/DSCN0056.jpg
Will have a square stock frame rail, scale cage, TXT axles sinec I cant afford the D60 look alikes, lexan skins, R2 with disco, crawlmaster, blah blah blah
Should be a good time. Updates as I get them. Most will happen after I am able to sell my old crawler on ebay so I have cash to spend on teh new project. Everything up til now was cheap.

So I got a great start on the frame, and I will post pics soon, but I am realizing just how heavy this thing is going to be. I am planning to run leaves in the back, and am curious what you guys recommend. I was initially planning on running Diaz jugg leaves, but I dont know if they can take the weight? SO now I am considering hilift leaves, or maybe even teh leaves off one of those huge dumper rigs that use TXT axles as well? Mammoth or something like that?

What do yo guys know about the spring rates of these leaves? I still want it to flex obviously, but need it to be able to handle the weight.

Thoughts? Ideas? Thanks guys....

Use high lift lowers so you can adjust the stiffness by adding or removing leafs. And use a jugg springsingle and cut in half for the upper.
BTW you'll need to make a trac bar.But for some reason i doubt you shuold have any problem with that. MAD FLEX!

Here is tonight's update: I got the frame made this last weekend, so tonight I put it together and mounted hte front clip of the willys.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/06...s/DSCN0084.jpg

From there I got the cab section done
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/06...s/DSCN0085.jpg

And then worked out the rear cab section since it is going to be a 4 seater.

It's coming along nicely, but holy craap is it huge! I am still debating on whether or not the R2 can handle it!

sweet! i will deffinatly be watching this build! looks great so far.

Bronco 10-01-2007 07:51 PM

:shock:looking great!!! im watchin

BrockGrimes 10-01-2007 07:54 PM

It's kinda heavy. In the pic I posted above, mine is mounted on a NN chassis with stock maxx shocks and springs 1 on each corner.

I'd just get a handfull of leaves and mix and match.

Looks great so far. "thumbsup" Brazing or welding?

HULK 10-01-2007 08:11 PM

Thanks guys. All welded, and I am not doing leaves in the back anymore on my real project, so this is getting coilovers on all 4 corners as well.

Looks like a great start on the tubing! Do you still have a engine compartment?

I don't think an r2 will stand up to this. I suggest a twin force tranny coupled to another tranny for a transfer case.

SpyderMonkee 10-01-2007 11:17 PM

Nnnniiiiiiiiiccccceeee!!!!

Makes me want to go wrench on my '51 flatfender instead of the Cobra.

I'll stay tuned.

Thanks John. I still have an engine compartment, what for?
Thats a bummer to hear. I really want the easy and small disco setup. What other tranny do you recommend?

Etype R 10-02-2007 12:22 PM

Josh, I can show you my dig setup some time, along with the V2 tranny. My dig setup is all in the rear axle, with a 645 servo that disengages one of the gears, and locks it up. I still need to put it all back together though, and its not as scale as having it off the tranny. But it works well.

JohnRobHolmes 10-02-2007 12:39 PM

The engine compartment would just be a nice scale touch. If you used an AX-10 tranny coupled to another tranny you could hide the motor up front and still have plenty of room down below the floorboard.
