| How are you guys doing leafs?
Like what material that is readily available are you using to make your leaf springs etc... I'm trying to go for a more scale look but the problem is my shock mounting location won't allow the axles to go any lower on the truck in so in full droop, it sits more at a lifted truck height rather than scaler height. I can partially lower the front end down but not the rear. I'm willing to fabricate up some leafs or buy them but then what are you guys doing for the shackles, also? Thanks in advance! -Ian |

i made my leaf springs from an old HPI nitro pull starter. the hard part is mounting them to the axle. i tried drilling a hole in them with a drill press with no luck. then i tried filing a tig welder tip to a point but that blasted the spring in half. so i used tag wire from work and made tiny super small u-bolts. works like a charm. for shackles i used 0.060" styrine. also works like a charm. hope this helps |

I used the same nitro pull start spring. I did drill a hole thru the center of the sping, and drilled a hole thru the axle c, and bolted it down. For shackles, I used brass.... a lot harder to work with, but sooooo worth it. |

Hmm anyone mind making up a set? I've got no access to styrene which is why I had to use aluminum in my Scaler build. Yeah I know it sucks but it seems no stores here have one, even the home depot that is literally 2 minutes walking distance. I was told thin aluminum sheets cut to the right size would work too?

aluminum isn't going to work. It is a material that will bend and not "spring" back. you need to use a metal that is heat treated. order a starter for any nitro engine.

Oh ok. I may end up not doing it, I got the front drooped to the right height(though it does rub a little, have to work that out) and the rear I'm probably just going to do a Bed Cage and mount it off that.

Here is what i am running but rcbros. has a good kit from what i hear. I used all tamiya parts for my truck tell me what you think. wanted it pretty scale so I went hand bros in front with links and leafs in rear like a real bronco.

Actually guys its quite alright, and I couldn't run Blade's chassis anyway, it would be WAY too short for this scaler Chameleonkid made them up to my dimensions and should be arriving in a box(or padded/bubble wrap filled envelope) sometime this week. The shackles, well I'll have to figure that out.. and Ibeenhalved, you do realize this is on a Micro scale, right?

Nice looking springs. Is that some small wire on there holding the leafs together? Was also wondering how many sets of springs can be made from one pull starter? |

depends on how long the springs are, whether or not you have multiple leafs and the amount of arch in the springs themselves... I would say a full set or two would be easy to get... I got 3 full sets out of my pull start |

I would agree. It all depends on how you make them... but about 2 or 3 sets. Those leafs are made out of an HPI k4.6 nitrostar pull start |

I've actually been thinking.. You know those laundry baskets you can get at places such as walmart, walgreens etc..? Well we've had them in my house(mom likes them because they fold and are convenient) and well a few are falling apart, but I noticed they might be good to make leaf springs if anyone needs visual reference, I'll get pics. By the way, David I got the rears mounted but it was hard because I had many holes drilled from when it was shock sprung and during "prototyping" back when I had no clue what I was doing in January. So used some modeling putty to fill in those and going to re-do it, right now it looks completely unrealistic but within a few hours, that should change. Hopefully I can get the fronts mounted tomorrow and be all good to go ~Stay tuned~ Ian |
