Post RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread

Here is my RedCat Sumo RSMC build thread.

Plans for this thread are to make it the definitive RSMC Q&A/ mild build thread.

I got into RC crawlers when a friend traded my an AX10 for my old Cherokee bumper I couldn't get rid off. I figured it was more liquid than a huge bumper in my shed... ya I never sold it... just played around with it on trails when it got slow or at lunch, I always wanted something smaller so I can goof around with it at the campfire.

My wife bought me a Redcat sumo for Christmas.

Anyways here is the "real rig".

Here is the Red Cat Sumo Crawler after I pulled all the goofy stickers off it

So what's the build plan? Battery conversion? Bigger tires? What?

Here's a quick Youtube video I made to show the steering modes

(hopefully the embed works)
if not: maybe the mods can fix it.

First thing I noticed is the springs are way too stiff.... maybe it's different with this little stuff, but un-captured springs lead to unbalanced rigs in full size so I pulled the coils off and measured the length of the shock and cut the coils to that length (2 loops for now).

Here is the difference in ride height (cut on the PS side)

Uncut vs cut flex is much improved
(here's total flex)

Here's the point where it lifts a tire

Seems pretty balanced now. But I did order the RedCat Softer coils to see if that helps also. (cutting coils should theoretically raise the spring rate). I'll play with that when the new ones come in.

Exactly.

I saw this thread:
Redcat Sumo micro crawler (RSMC) parts breakdown and losi compatibility
and this one:
Redcat sumo help

but I'm not exactly clear:

I have a Micro Brain charger and an Onyx 200 charger, so I'm not really wanting to go LiPo unless there is a way to use my current charger.

Can someone point me to what battery and where to buy it?
What voltage do I need? (I'm guessing 6v since 4 x 1.5v "AAA" batteries equals 6v. )

Can I run it on more voltage and how many cells?

What mAh do I want to buy?

One of the obvious weaknesses on the RCSC is that the steering linkage sticks out so far it gets hung up easily.

I guess you could mod it like this thread shows:
Losi Micro or Redcat Sumo?

but I think larger tires are a must also.

What tires should I get?

I flipped my tie rods (with aftermarket servos) and the clearance issues went poof. Check out the sticky thread "post your battery finds here". I run 7.4 no problems.

Pics and specs on the servos please? I just got my Sumo the other day but haven't had time to really look at it or run it at all.

if you relocate the shocks down to the lowest hole it will improve flex and clearance a little
