Chassis by Numbers Open for all

Hi guys, I was browsing thru the threads here on RCC and ran across a build where Harley was building a Scout.
Harley's Scout 800 Woods Runner

And he mentioned he has a site with templates for a few different style chassis.

So right now I'm having a go at a 1/20 scale scout, and for all you guys that want to get started on building with brass or any other material you want using a template make it really easy, so I figured I would post what I have built and hope some of you join in and post up your chassis builds.

I already cut all my pieces and in the process of putting it together and am having a blast, below is where I am ATM with the scout template, I scaled the template down to 43% when I printed them and it puts my wheel base rite at about 5 1/4" this won't be a build thread, once I complete my chassis I will make a thread for the build.

I just want to see if anyone else wants to post up there chassis builds and any tips they figure out along the way please share.

i still need to build the shock hoops and build some body panels. I have about 3 days into this chassis and as you can see my solder joints still need some help as this is only my second attempt at building one, so dive in and have fun,

Where did you get those tube bending jigs. Keep up the good work bud

The nice thing working with this scale is you don't need a bunch of special tube benders, i just use the technique MG said by pitting solder in the tube and use my bending board which is a very expensive piece of wood with drywall screws put in it, i take the template and bend the tube until is close to the shape i need then cut off the excess. so far it has worked out really well.



If anyone has any questions please ask, i will try to answer the best i can, but im really just learning myself and thats why i figured we could all kind figure it out together and share ideas, looking at what MG and Chevy and Dan and a few others have done really makes me want to try and figure this out.

Seriously? How'd you bend the frame rails? Same technique?

No for the Chassis i didn't use my hi dollar bending board, for that i followed MG's tutorial again. here is the link i would take my frame rails and tape them together so when i heat and bend them they stayed the same shape, then put it up to the template and bend more or less, use some leather gloves it gets hot as hell.

The templates really make it easy, and i hope more guys here give it a shot, and i still may need some help with the grill once i get the fender skins done.

If you want to do a printed grill, you may want to get it first so that you can make the fenders match the grill.

Damn Chino you make that look to easy, you have some brass skills. You have convinced me to give this a try.

All i have left to finish is the front and rear shock brackets and upper four link brackets, then i was going to move onto the skins, what measurements would you need for the grill?

Thank you. But i really don't, it is that easy if you can use a soldering iron, you can make any of the chassis Harley has posted, just remember when you go to print the templates scale them down to whatever wheelbase you want, then number the pieces as you cut them and start putting them together. and when you get it started post it up in here so maybe more will try, its allot of fun once you get started,

I tacked soldered the front shock hoops in, just to line them up and i will go back and solder all around them to make them done. then i can work on a few more braces in the back and the shock mounts.

You should, I have been looking at the mud truck template. i have the rims Fungi made and the mud tires MG has and have been dying to put them on something. make sure you post some pics of the build as you go.

What size are the rails?

The top one is the hollow tubing used for the cage and can be found at most hobby shops or metal shops, and the bottom one is what i used for the chassis.
