micro markets all dried up?
 

Wow, been out of the RC game for some time, just boxed it all up and dealt with life. Just starting to pull the boxes down ... and it's looking like the micro crawler world is all but dead it seems?

Tell me it's not so.

It certainly seems it's moving that way. Brands like Losi don't even have a current micro section on their site anymore.

Far from dead, just unfortunately not very active on here which is a shame. There's the micro rock crawler group on FB with nearly 3k members, but FB groups aren't the best way for archiving information and now everyone seems to want to start another group rather than contributing to the big group. So now we have about 4 to 6 groups with a bit of activity rather than one with lots.

As far as Micro rigs with worm axles like the Losi

The Proline 1/25 Ambush has been released again. Great electronics, ladder frame chassis, and leaf springs all around

The ECX Temper looks closest to the Losi Micro Crawler, but it has trekker width and length, bushings instead of bearings, garbage electronics, and wonky suspension geometry, but it's very cheap and the links can be easily fixed. Better electronics are a worthy upgrade here. (The XYS-BL20A I recommend on here many years ago is still the best bang for low buck) all in all it's great for parts or a project.

For traditional ring and pinion axles we still have the Sumo and HBX devastator.

Now we have the ECX 1/24 Barrage/RGT Adventurer/FGT outlander.
Ladder frame chassis, slightly smaller wheels and tires than the 1.0" standard, but luckily the same 7mm wheel hex. All 3 models are all basically the same. The axles have internal gears very similar to the sumo.
Again ECX garbage electronics and the truck desperately needs more gear reduction for crawling, but it's a great trail truck or base for a project

There's also the RC4WD 1/18 mini Gelande. It's more of a true to scale 1/18 like diecast models not 1/18 like the Losi mini from way back.
Axles slightly wider than the Sumo Crawler or ECX, highly detailed Body and metal axles, And metal links and chassis, the newest version has more gear reduction in the transmission and 3 bodies available a D90, Bronco, and a JK
Electronics are okish... Also uses the same 1.0" wheel and 7mm hex standard.

In a smaller scale there's the 1/36 Orlandoo
And the true to scale 1/24 geko. It's a very nice setup, but a bit expensive



the Sumo Crawler and HBX devastator are still around,

The scene is far from dead, it just has waves of popularity. We probably have more micros and aftermarket parts than ever before.

That was posted somewhere else, but somehow it didn't make it to the micro area until now haha. Here are some more pictures. IMO the chassis is a huge step backwards from the mini gelande and 1/24 ECX Barrage.
The Bodies are nice
The axle housings and layout look inspired by the Barrage which is good, but they screwed it up with that chassis. looks like it's going to cost more than the $99 Barrage. Close to $130 so there had better be some fantastic electronics in this to be worth it IMO.

That Coyote body does something for me. I’d like one I could paint myself. I agree on the goofy chassis, too. IIRC it’s setup for powering a FPV.

It says power to fpv in one place and I also saw it mentioned for auxiliary lighting so I have a feeling it's the same or similar Electronics to the barrage with the 2 aux power leads. However there's mention of a "smart motor break" or something

I never crawled my Barrage. I saw how fast it was in my living room and straight away changed the tranny.

For 1/24 the most scale you'll find is the geko24, but they aren't cheap.


You can find them used, but the Trekker is discontinued and not very scale, but a good platform with a good ESC.
Worm gear axles don't look scale, but have lots of needed reduction and perform well

For $130 the Proline 1/25 Ambush is available again. 4 leaf spring suspension which as all leaf springs needs breaking in. Decent s scale chassis that's easy to extend.

For my $99 the 1/24 Barrage or FTX is my choice. Slightly smaller wheels and tires look great and are more scale, but use the same 7mm hex, it's cheaper so it has crap electronics. The axles look more scale being ring and pinion, but like all ring & pinion axles this scale it's hard to get a big enough gear to gear it down. The chassis, links and suspension are pretty darn nice for the $ and probably the most scale at this price

The Redcat Sumo/ HBX devastator are pretty nice. Similar style axles to Barage. Very similar gearing at the axles. 4 wheel steer, lots more reduction at the transmission. About the same price as the Barrage

Nothing I'm aware of. You'd still need to solder on the appropriate motor and battery connectors.

think i read on another forum/fb page,that the battery is only 130 nihm! thats losi McRC size

I have a feeling it's bigger than 130. The losi McRC was 150 and the Trekker was 220. Either way once the pack dies and gets a fresh charge and dies again I usually swap to Lipo. Someone from Carisma commented that it's lipo capable, and was careful with wording so I'm not sure if there is a Lipo cut off.
