Default New guy building a tuber with powdercoat

I've been out of RC for 15 years, but these crawlers got me back into the scene.

I decided to start with a MRC and try to build something decent using aftermarket parts.

This is my list of parts I have:
  • Losi MRC donor
  • Reedy Stump Puller motor
  • Losi aluminum front c's
  • Losi aluminum front spindles
  • Losi aluminum rear axle lockouts
  • Losi Lipo battery
  • Losi Blue Rock Claws
  • Losi CVD axles
  • Hitec HS-5645MG servo
  • Losi threaded shocks
  • Snipe Chassis
  • Eritex heavy wheels
  • 6 foot piece of 1/4 inch delrin rod
  • A whole bunch of miscellaneous hardware
First thing I did was powdercoat all the neat parts. This is a bright orange powder that I had left over from a big job I did awhile back.

Then I assembled the heavy wheels and Blue tires. I used Losi memory foam in the tires.

Tomorrow, I build a front servo plate for the big servo and bent lower links out of delrin.

It's going to be a slow build.

You are never going to lose that crawler of yours. Are you going to run the grappler body? If so, what are your plans for a color combo?

Lovin the color choice. Looks like it will be a sweet build. Is that a DMG chassis?

Tower Hobbies for about 7 dollars. Money well spent in my opinion.

I did a bit more tonight before I came in from the shop.

My challenge was to figure out how to 4 link this thing. What I wound up doing was cutting the stock upper link apart and converting it to individual upper links.

I just cut it apart, drilled each arm, tapped threads in the hole, inserted a length of 3mm all thread, and topped it with a Traxxas ball end.

Next challenge was the anchor points for these 4 link arms on the axle end. What I wound up doing was cutting my original chassis side plates down and drilling and countersinking holes for the screws to afix it to the axle housing. I believe I will be able to mount my full size servo on this plate. I went ahead and coated it orange too.

After getting it all assembled, I figured out that I need to clearance the sides a bit more for the shocks during articulation. Tomorrow I will do that, blast it and recoat it. with the orange powder again.

Time for an update post.

I got the truck together and running. The chassis from Zorlac is one great piece of work. After a few days though, I realized that I wasn't really happy with a tuber, so I tore it all back apart and gave the Snipe parts to my stepson to put on his stock truck.

I then got a DNA Slingshot chassis. There were a couple of things I liked about the DNA a little better.

So, back to out to the shop for some more powder...

I like the inboard positioning of the lower links on this chassis. I did modify the chassis plate to allow me to run Traxxas 3mm rod ends. I am probably going overkill with this stuff, but I like reliability.

I also really like the DNA front servo, link mount plate. The big Hitec servo fits just right. I had to build one steering link, so I just used a Traxxas ball end, some 3mm all thread, and the 2mm ball end cut off of the stock link.

Lots of steering with the big servo and the Losi CV axles...

I got the Reedy Stump Puller motor in. It has too much speed for my tastes with the stock pinion, so I ordered an 11 and a 12 tooth pinions to try and slow it down some...

I put the Losi LiPo on the rear axle using the DNA plate...

Obligatory flex shot...

So far, I'm very happy with the Losi threaded shocks. I limited them using the spacers out of the stock shocks and used 50 weight oil. I'm sure I will have to tweak the setup some once I get it finally together.

Now, I'm waiting on delivery of my Hyperion charger from Holmes, and Tekin FX R ESC and motor pinions from Tower. I also have a Grappler body for it that I need to paint.

I still need to order the upgraded diff and center lockers, but they seem to be out of stock everywhere.

Kevin

Have you tried it on any rocks yet? I was wanting to get the same chassis as you have, so I just want to see if people like it.
