shimmy shim sham..... ok , so i was having clicking issues.ended up being the pinion gear in the front axle .i picked up an overdrive pinion that should be here in a couple of days.when i go to shim my ring gear chunk, what do i use to shim with?i think if i would have been shimmed from the beginning i may have not had this problem. bueller, bueller?cheers, b |
Normally, I use 1/8 nitro clutch shims to shim diffs. - http://www.avidrc.com/product/5/acce...ccesories.html BUT, I'm unsure if the Losi 1.9 diffs takes a smaller shims |
I did a little research. The shims I posted above are 5mm The pinion shaft is 4mm The locker is 7mm |
ok then.small-ish some sort of washer it is.......DOH!:flipoff: i just thought maybe it would be plastic or something,poly,delrin,etc........ cheers |
You know those pens that un-screw and come apart in the middle? The ones that have that thin metal beauty ring between the two halfs? I used little beauty ring things and they seemed to be the perfect fit"thumbsup" |
I just put in the new gear, no shims needed and the gear mesh was spot on |

Deffo improvement (hard to tell at first, then it dawns on you,: less back flips, climbs bit better etc). |
Same here no shimming needed. |
no shimming, but it is noisier than the stock. I have not see much improvement yet but I have seen increased torque twist. I will have some rock time on Sat and Sun. at two comps. |

I can't see how overdriving the front can increase torque twist, seems to defy logic and natural physics. Sorry if it's a daft question, no offence intended, but you did fit the Traxxas gear on the front axle right, not the rear? |
In mine, the overdrive front, reduced torque twist if anything. Very rare I suffer from much TT anymore (GC-3 chassis). |
ok, i put it in the overdrive last night with no shims.and man, it is noisy! ok, so the torque twist issue......it seems that mine twists as well.it is kinda odd,but i have a mess of a suspension yet ......so i will see after some other shocks get here.cheers |
Guys if it's noisy why didn't you try shimming it? Since i shimmed mine and packed it with grease it's not more more noisy than before. On the torque twist. Your now pulling with the front more (be it only very slightly) so in most situations because the front is pulling more than the rear is pushing it has to reduce torque twist. Obviously we are talking a difference of 1 tooth here so it's not going to be a vast difference, but on mine at least it was noticeably better. For those experiencing more torque twist after the overdrive mod could you please take a few min's and explain where and under what circumstances it's worse, is it at certain angles or on certain sections? Even better if you could get a vid before and after to compare "thumbsup" Cheers Mark |
did they put it in the wrong end cause it dosnt make any since to me either |
the math for anyone that wants to know 38/14= 2.71 stock 38/15= 2.53 new pinion stick it in the front ......... :afro: |
HELP! Ok I've searched the house went to three different stores and cannot find any pens with the beauty ring! I went to mcmaster carr and a few hobby spots and cannot find any shims to fit. I have some clicking going on in the front diff and really need to shim it my motor is running much warmer due to the added resistance. Can someone please pass along a place I can pick up some shims! |
In Cbr6fs' build thread he posted the dimensions for the shims he used - 7mm ID, 10mm OD, 0.2 thick. I started installing my new overdrive pinion earlier this evening and did not luck out on it spinning smoothly w/out shims, so I'm on the hunt myself. I'm going to stop by my LHS soon to see if they have the correct shims (loose), but I also scoured Tower looking for pre-packaged options that the LHS might have in stock. I was able to find several 8mm x 10mm options - the ID is a tad too big, but they'd probably work just fine considering the application. Can't go wrong trying them out considering the price. ;-) HPI Racing Washer 8x10x0.2mm (10) Associated Differential Shim Set RC18T (4) Ofna Shims 8x10x0.3 (10) - Chris |
