Default CVDs for the Mini?

hey guys, what CVD do you reccomend?

i was looking at 3racing and losi, and now im stuck.

ive been reading both sides are bad, but the losis are "fixed" but not sure, its still debatable if its worth buying.

Ran my Losi CVD in a tough comp this weekend and they did well for me, another driver broke his on the first gate. I like them.

iam running losi cvds in mine (have been for 6 months now) and got in one nasty bind at our comp yesterday and they survived!! knock on wood but they are holding up great.. you can also run lnc cvds and cut them down to size and and grinf the ends down to fit in the locker if iam not mistaken.

I am running knuckle weights and not wheel weights. As a result I think the cvd's are holding up ok. I am worried though. I know some guys are doing the LCC cvd conversion but I am not ready for that just yet as it involves a front axle huge overhaul. . I think the guys who are snapping them are guys running a lot of weight on the wheels and then cranking up steering.

Today I treated my mrc brutal today, some of the hardest landings that I have ever put my mini through, and she did it repeatedly.
The cvd's held up,I was really worried I was going to break a servo case or a axle housing,or even my chassis.

I went through Losi MRC cvds like crazy....then I upgraded to LCC cvds and they've held up well for quite a while now!

thanks guys for your input.

i think i may go with the MRC CVDs from losi, then heat treat them.

if im correct, you heat treat them with a blow torch and submerge the item in water right?

BTW, does anyone know what is a common breaking point on the MRC CVDs from losi?

I wouldnt heat treat them myself if I was you.
The treating they get during manufacturing is superiour to what you can probably provide. Also depending on the process they used to treat the metal initially, treating again or in a different fashoin may actually have a adverse affect.

Mine have always broke at the stub where it meets the cup

I,ve been running 3s with 10oz in each front wheel and overdrive.
I,d say I treat my mrc pretty rough ( that's a under statement by the way ) I also have more steering than any other mini I've seen and I've only broke pins in the cvd's, I changed the pins to harder drill bits to cure that problem.
I have broken gears in axles and tranny but not a cvd.

As Paul said, heat treating is not a process that you can easily do at home and certainly not with a torch. The heat needs to be applied evenly and equally across the metal. And, you certainly dont want to submerge it in cold water afterward....

Also, as Paul mentioned, I too would either snap the pins or snap the head off of the shaft when mine broke. Turn down your EPA on the steering a bit and that should help your CVDs last a bit longer.

On my second set in over 2 years... First broke because they were fatigued after a year or so of hard compin' and lots of practice runs... I've been happy w/ mine... DH's w/ full weights and enough steering that the bell of the CVD cuts into the axle shaft... (well used to) Oh, and 22t 3s lipo and overdrive mod...

They seem to be holding up to the Mongoose and a heavy front end in my truck fine, but I did buy 2 sets and always carry the spare set when I drive the truck.

I was at the same comp as Crawlher, and beat the piss out of my Losi CVD's. They hold up quite well. I have yet to break them. My rig is fairly light but my driving is pretty aggressive.

My vote is plunge for the Losi CVD's and keep a set of pins around.

I beleive this to be true. My old MRC I broke these things almost every run along with ring and pinions.

I now have what feels like twice the motor and am now running 3s instead of 2s.

I've manage to rip drivelines in half before I upgraded to MIPS, and now I just striped out a HR trany gear.

Ring and pinions and cvd's still in great shape
