Default Hello all, looking to start MRC scaler build!

Hi all (*waves and smiles)!

I've actually be a reader and member for the past two years but haven't had a crawler, thus haven't posted. I've been a big Traxxas guy (Rustler's, Stampede's, Bandit, Rally, E-Revo, and Losi Micro-T) for the past four years, so I'm not new to the hobby by any means. I have an establish setup of batteries, tools, parts, etc.

I'm FINALLY ready to stop drooling over all the scales in the gallery here and get my own to moisten. The cheap way in appears to be a Losi MRC as I have all the necessary electronics to complete it.

I would love to fit a Land Rover body on it (dream car ), but of course wheelbase is too short for 1/10 bodies so I would try to make something or go with the L-Trail chassis kit.

Anyhow, right now it's all talk. I have the funds sitting in Paypal but have yet to make a move as I'm a major cheapo. One thing I've noticed is the lack of MRC scalers. What's the reason for this? Too much competition? Wrong size for most bodies?

As for motors, what are most of you running? I have both brushless and brushed ESC, so It's just a matter of picking out a motor. I bought a 2s 600mAh LiPo pack the other day to run in the truck.

Well, that's all for now! I look forward to being an active learning member to hopefully give back to the crawler community someday as I do the Traxxas community.

EDIT:

Just fetched a cheap waterproof XL-5 ESC for this rig (yeah, the one I don't have yet...). Found a guy that may be selling a New Bright Land Rover body too, but waiting on reply. As for motors, all I have in the right size are a few Radio Shack motors that I've had for years. What brushed motors do y'all run?

Sorry for the double post, but thought it was worth-while. I just went ahead and ordered an MRC Pro Race Roller. Should be here in a few days. I'll play with it stock for a bit them get the Scaler show on the road!

I'm also building an MRC Pro Roller/L-Trail rig, but I'm setting it up on a New Bright Jeep TJ. I'll be starting a build thread soon. I think you'll see more in the near future with the MRC so cheap right now.

You should check out the build threads for the 'Slick rock Samurai' and the 'Not so slick rock Samurai' and the 'Sticky rock Samurai'. They were all based on the L-Trail chassis.

Thanks! I checked them out and very interesting indeed. I'm very worried about the wheelbase and width being too small. Sounds like I may end up making my own chassis, and figuring out some wheel extension setup.

Wheelbase and track width depend on the body you are going to use. And most people that are building a rig using the L-Trail chassis are building a Class 1 machine. You aren't going to build a competitive Class 3 truck out of an MRC.

I know nothing about these "Classes" you speak of (assuming Class 1 is 1.55/1.9, and Class 2 is 2.2?), but it's purely for fun. I may feel the truck is not wide enough, in which case I will widen it. Body comes first, mods follow after.

What I was referring to are the SORRCA classifications. The Class 1 specifications list the following limits on wheel track:

  • Wheels must be aligned within the body wheel wells (center of wheels to center of wheel wells +/‐ 1/2
    inch total combined)
And

  • The tread of the tires cannot extend outside of the wheel wells more then 1/2 of the tread width, flairs
can be added to reach min. spec.

And maximum tire size is listed as 4.19" regardless of wheel diameter.

Class 1 rigs are intended to look, and to some extent perform similarly to, a street truck. These builds work well with MRC gear - they are lighter and don't encounter the same kinds of loads as Class 3 builds.

Thank you for the link, pixelnate. I hadn't been aware of SORRCA, just ROAR. Fortunately I will not be competing. This will just be a (hopefully) fun project.

Very anxious to get this package. What, has it been two days already?

Thanks, yeah. I actually posted in it a few days ago. Looking interesting! Will the small motor be powerful enough? I'm thinking about making a custom 540 mount for mine.
