What size lipo are you running?
It shouldn't.. a bec is best way to go.. without a bec, running 2s should be good, the internal bec doesn't have to work as hard to limit power.. if ur running 3s, the internal bec has to limit 11.1v to 5v.. where with 2s the internal has to only drop it a little bit.. at least how it was explained to me at one time.. cc bec...

I`ve just changed my original servo to a full size servo. The ESC got hotter with the full size servo so I have just ordered a Castle creations bec.
I will tell you how I go when it arrives.

The bec will help a lot but it is not a have to at least not with mine I ran 6 or so comps on mine with a 645mg and a mini slider motor with the stock esc before I got a bec. The bec will help cooling the esc off some. All on 2s

I am running a full size servo on my losi mrc with the stock battery and stock esc. Only thing is the servo is a little slow but works well.

ittybitty hooked me up with a 7954 servo and a bec. I have not had any problems since. I'd say you do need a bec.
