MRC custom axle project - WIP

Hi all,

since a long time, i m planning to build an "original parts compatible" axle to accept c-hubs clocking without any mods (like xr-10 mods for mrc)

I started design 3D parts for 3D Printer...

here is the first "available" part... hoping to complete a set up as soon as possible :)

time for pictures...

project v.8 !

1st shot was printed with "PLA" filament on a makerbot replicator II.
with an accurracy around 0,1 mm, we can see filament path and sometime empty space between but i m impressed about "sturdiness" of that part.

Final print (if it append ;-)) would be in white ABS (stronguest than that first proto and better print render), printed on an ENVISIONTEC Ultra 3SP "thumbsup"

That tilting servo mount is freaking cool.

That could be adapted to the rear link mount very easily.....

Just a thought.

hi,

thanks for all your comments "thumbsup"

any news !
Top part printed yesterday (the grey one)
This one fits perfectly on bottom part.
Sorry for extrenal aspect (finiton), the final print will be better

any pics with :
-mini revo bevel gear for overdrive (but project is compatible with original mrc bevel gear)
-original diff gear
-SDI shafts

Re: MRC custom clockable axle project - WIP

Hi,

I m wondering that too since the begining :ror:

Just trying to make an axle ready for testing with original parts !
I m not sure that final print would give me more than original axle setup but there are many bad points on original ones that i would like to correct (servo position, low link position) and i would like to have the capacity of inclinaison for c-hub like on my sudu wraith.

testing give me the oportunity to think about a next project "thumbsup"

@ T_Tank: did your kingpin inclination c-hub Knuckle project give you satisfaction on rocks ? i m thinking about making c-hub on the missing parts on my project but i m not sure about exact c-hub size with 8° inclinaison...

Re: MRC custom clockable axle project - WIP

The KPI knuckles I made for my mrc worked great may need to make the steering link mount stick out further but overall for my light weight sj30 it seams to work as intended with letting me use a smaller faster servo over a huge high torque one.

I went with 8o of KPI as that's whats found stock on the axial wraith knuckle/hubs they also I think have 8o of caster as well which is what I mimic'd in my design.

I for the most part like the mrc axle design just like to have other options as the housing does have its limitations with your setup you could in theory make wraith adapter tubes so one base housing with various hub/knuckle options.

Now I just wish there was a housing that let you flip the ring gear around so you could use a mini lst front diff case with a mrc solid rear axle, right now if you try that they spin towards each other >.<

Re: MRC custom clockable axle project - WIP

Hey,

Thank you for that feedback.

i m trying to design a 8° KPI chub/knukkles (damn, that 8° draw turn my brain upside down :D) but i m not sure the ABS material will appreciate hard rock crawling...

@T_Tank: I don t really understand why are you looking to use a Mini LST diff ? any underdrive goal ? stronger diff ?

Re: MRC custom clockable axle project - WIP

looking at mini lst front diff housing for a project thats sitting but the mini lst ring an pinion are recycled in the mrc just with a locker thrown in. Would be easier to have a mirrored axle housing then trying to reverse engineer the mini lst diff case that mounts to so many things directly..

What I did when I designed my kpi knuckles an chubs was make them without the kpi to make sure I had the spacing and pivot right so the axle would move like stock then take the centermost position of that stock pivot an turn it 8o for kpi then rotate the entire thing for 8o caster... Probably doest make as much sence as I want it to but how tinkercad works its very litteral >_>

So really short part
-make stock style knuckles an chubs so you have a mostly stock geometry
-modify the geometry for the desired level of kpi and ackermen
-make sure you got the holes for the chub mount to the axle housing right took me a few tires to get that righ!
-be mindful on tollerances of your printer an print acordingly (using shapeways I .25mm undersize screw holes an bearing sockets can always carefully sand an drill later)

Re: MRC custom clockable axle project - WIP

Hey ya !

Thanks for all these tricks, now i understand the 8° kpi. That gave me enought to try a 3d project...

since last time, i ve print "non detailled" parts for links and first tests...
I need to be more accurate for some adjustements but i feel it good !

Next step, any corrections, new system for links and ... those 8° kpi and (i hope) zero degree ackerman steering setup parts... first print will begin on shapeways.com, i give you more when postman bring it to me "thumbsup"

Great job on this axle.

Inclined kingpins is certainly a nice added touch since you're fabbing the parts anyway.

Looking forward to more updates.

All in all gotta say beutiful work truespace on your housings and those c-chub/knuckles look awesome to!

Re: MRC custom clockable axle project - WIP

Thank you guys for all your comments,

I m so sorry to not be able to more explain my project because of my bad English talk.
However, i ve just received shapeway first axle print: wow , shapeway make awesome job with 3d printers ! good finition, ups tracking, good travel condition... a lil bit expensive for France but i m impressed about 3d print accuracy compared to first parts printed on makerbot replicator

so, first setup will need to re-draw any points on the c.a.d. project but i m pretty happy for a first shot :)

any pics with my old steering bar :ror:

So..... are these available to have printed?

Re: MRC custom clockable axle project - WIP

Figure in time they will be made avail like the other folks that are working on custom housings for the mrc

Re: MRC custom clockable axle project - WIP

Hey,

Not available for this release because i have to fix some wrong sized parts (ball bearing spaces, c-hub fixing points ...)
after, i guess it will be available on shapeway but if guys here continue to inovate on all mrc active threads, this project will never end :lmao:

hi,

Any corrections on c-hubs, knuckles, links, reverse servo plate and any parts resized ... will allow M3 screws .

now, i m waiting my dear postman "thumbsup"
