Losi Jimny Scaler

Not quit sure where to post this..

I have a Tamiya Jimny and the stock chassis is more on road.

The Losi Mini-Crawler axles are just about the right width..
Sooo

https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.n...a9&oe=567C711B

Thought I could cut down a Axial Chassis but still too big.
Decided to try and make my own chassis rails..

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...psvddhsjck.jpg

Well... Little bit of a learning curve..
Stretched the wheelbase a 1/2"inch (may need to be 5/8)
1.55 wheels and RC4WD Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ ( just a hair on the small size)
This will be my ride height.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...psvpmdjdv6.jpg

I'll be redoing the chassis to make room for steering linkage and shocks.

Soo far I don't like the small 2mm hardware and my drives lines are a 1/2"inch short..

Were can I find or how can I make longer drive-lines?
Are there better mini motors?
Axle options?
re-locating shocks mounts on axles. (wider mounts?)
This is my first not out of the box build.
Any advice or criticism will be welcomed.

Re: Losi Jimny Scaler

I have realized that I'm coming in a bit late for Losi Mini Crawler info..
About 5 yrs. LOL..
I did go thru the Losi MRC Ultimate Guide

Scaler chassis links were Dead..
So I attempted to make my own, Gonna have to redo it tho..
My biggest issue is drive lines are too short now..
Any hints on making them longer would be Just Great..
I'll fake the rest.
:D

Re: Losi Jimny Scaler

If you need driveshafts I'd look at the SDI4x4 shafts as they are very strong and scale looking

PROPELLER SHAFT - Scale Designs International

Nice work BTW! "thumbsup"

Prop Shafts, Didn't even think about those.
Thanks.

Re: Losi Jimny Scaler

Didn't like the first chassis so I tried making another one.
Still some kinks to work out.
Need to kick out the frame rails right after the link mounts so they don't rub the frame.
Shocks mounted on top of the axle using the Lock-out top screw.
Hope that holds..
Ride height and wheelbase seems about right.

This is my axle shock mount for now..

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps7fc01b19.jpg

I doubt they will hold up too well but for now, it helps it sit on it's own.
Still thinking of a better way to do it..

Re: Losi Jimny Scaler

I can't wait to see this one finished up. Ever since I saw that kit come out I wanted to see someone build a solid axle version.

Re: Losi Jimny Scaler

Thanks.. When I originally bought the kit, I was gonna run it as is..
After getting the chassis together and running it around, I figured it wasn't gonna work well for a crawler
with a On-road chassis..

Thanks to Tammies Hobbies for the extending the drives lines Idea and flexychevy for the extra drive line parts.
I got the drive lines figured out..
Used 2 female ends with the male shaft in between
aka: WildBoar style drive lines..
So simple, the solution escaped me..
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...pse4d10177.jpg

Now to make the battery and Electronic mounts to stiffen up the frame.

Thanks to Billet Works Designs
Their Labor Day sale ad popped up with just the right Parts I needed and
On Sale. :D .

Now I don't have to worry about my poor axle shock mounts pulling out..
Sweet.. :D

Re: Losi Jimny Scaler

3rd Shot Chassis.
Or..
3rd times a charm.. ;)

I think a 4th time would be Awesome... :D

My Links were hitting the chassis and binding up the flexing..
Soo,
Made another chassis with the skid below the chassis to make room for
the links..
Works much better..
Waiting for the new axle shock mounts from Billet Works Designs,
and New shocks and 1.55 BFG Mudders from Ebay to get here.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...pse8416ebf.jpg
Still need to lower it a bit, I want the shocks to be at least 50/50.
Right now it sits about 85/15% (almost fully extended)

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps079a63c2.jpg

Can't wait to paint it but body posts are consistently moving during the build.
Still debating on color too..

Re: Losi Jimny Scaler

Received my parts from Billet Works Designs.
Having a wee bit of a problem finding 2x18mm screws to hold the shocks
on. Removed the lower Ball to use 3mm screws but I'm guessing there is gonna
be some flex issues.
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps69d441e1.jpg

Also got my 1.55 BFGs (Mud Thrashers) and wheels from Ebay. Only a 1/2"inch taller and wider
than the RC4WD M/T Baja MTZs.
Now they look too big.

Made up some front shock tower/body mounts to level it out too..
https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.n...81&oe=56A152D9

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...psadc56acd.jpg

I was really hoping for the same size as my Old Tamiya BFGs But they are 1.9s
and hard as a Rock.. but they are the right size and look good.. Dang!!
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...psbec094cf.jpg

Still debating on color and body mounting.
Red or Blue for color.. Maybe..

I didn't want to go with the box color either but it looks just right in blue.
Installed the Mud Thrashers on Black wheels already.. :D

Re: Losi Jimny Scaler

I've got something similar to this in the works, still have to finish the stock kit though. Too many projects, not enough time.

From my experience, the only thing I would add is you can make a temporary chassis using 1/4" thick lexan or delrin sheet, until you are happy with the results, then use that as a template to cut out of aluminum or steel sheet. I kinda like the flexy plastic ladder chassis; it's like having a torsion chassis for an additional 1/2" of flex.

The SDI shafts are a good find.

Any updates?

kind've on Hold..
I've been thinking about using a MST CMX for a chassis.
Hidden bodyposts or not.
Interior or not..
Color..
Purpose..
I'm really good at starting Projects.. ;)

Re: Losi Jimny Scaler

Nice the only way to go is "straight axel" if it get to be scale. And only Losi,Kulak,Slickrock have right dimension of the axels.

My Samurai rides also on a MRC chassis, without a scale chassis but lowered and drooped shocks.

Not happy with my frame.
Seems Flimsy.
Still thinking about the MST CMX or some Chinese frame.
