Xkill's mini Is there anybody still here?! Eurocrawl is coming next year and I'd like to run another class. Mini sounds like a fun and cheap way to do that. Super would be another story, besides they are harder to pack and travel with :flipoff: So this is what I got on the mail: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1932/...48f023cc_z.jpg 100% RTR losi mini pro with a Novak 18.5 sensored brushless combo, all for a reasonable price. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1904/...2d183ce7_c.jpg Body is used but still in reasonable shape https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1960/...7e76e9e6_c.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1970/...3c283ae7_c.jpg Aluminum C-hubs with a lose pin that is already fixed. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1978/...50ac0522_c.jpg 15t pinion was also included  https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1972/...30a54fcd_c.jpg A trip to the garden for some testing... It all worked! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1917/...d12b3461_c.jpg But I hate the small screws so SolidWorks and 3D Printer to the rescue! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1917/...03e7e2bb_c.jpg Had to print the object in a different position, this led to poor looks but, more importantly, a nice place to set the bearings. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1961/...04851563_c.jpg New top link mount https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1942/...9ae79621_c.jpg Might need to make a V2 of this but for now it works. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1948/...dc4e6c38_c.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1972/...61b41864_c.jpg (Yes, I know the upper link on the chassis side is in the wrong side...) https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1910/...4d19c1c1_c.jpg This now looks better and gives be more options for tunning. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1970/...0b6eb481_c.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1955/...880523ba_c.jpg Poser shots Still lots of work ahead but having fun for now! |
Re: Xkill's mini Nice to see someone else working on a mini again lol. There isn't alot of action on this part but theres a few of use here that still run lol. |
Re: Xkill's mini I run the same motor/esc and really love it! Run the same tires as well. Yes, screws are small but these Minis are a blast to drive! Have a good time with your Mini "thumbsup" |
Re: Xkill's mini Drove it this weekend on real rocks and the car feels ok. Still a lot of work ahead but it's a great start! So far I liked the motor/esc combo more than I thought. Some other parts are on the way to keep this moving forward. |
Re: Xkill's mini Mini build continues. Next on the agenda was the front axle. The plan was to use (cheap alloy), AX10 c-hubs, bully v1 knuckles, 8mm stub universals (cheap and strong), and very short hubs to keep it legal. 5$ chubs https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4850/...015019b8_c.jpg 6$ Unis https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4901/...8f22c28a_c.jpg Bully v1 Knuckles from my Pro. They were done By D-Lux a few years ago. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4908/...f502d90c_c.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4859/...4de9e2dc_c.jpg Half way done https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4860/...49c6de94_c.jpg The hubs are ultra short and made out of magnesium (for the simple reason that I can get it free ;) and only weigh 4g each. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4901/...89348ec0_c.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4853/...e14d3bbe_c.jpg Done for now https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4895/...5bf9478c_c.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4900/...b4e9c303_c.jpg I have also designed a chassis that I'm waiting to get cut. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4867/...55dabc7e_c.jpg Have some plans for UD/OD but that will have to wait 8) |
Re: Xkill's mini nice project good ideas those that you have, keep setup of this rig alive and use it on the rocks ;) |
Re: Xkill's mini Nice looking chassis. Me and a buddy are currently experimenting with building a chassis. |
Re: Xkill's mini Nice, job. Makes me want a 3D printer. Also seeing your build motivates me to get started on mine again. That Novak Motor and ESC is really hard to come by. I searched for one for quite a while before I found one. Had to buy another whole MRC off Ebay to get the combo. |
Re: Xkill's mini Thanks. The printer only makes sence if you are able to design your own parts. If you can then it's a nice thing to have, for sure! Yes, this combo, especially the motor, is a nice score! If you got another rig then it's just spare parts! ;) |
Re: Xkill's mini Boy, this has snowballed!! I already have some parts done, but I'll post them when I get back home and can take proper pictures at them. The wheels and chassis are cut and mostly done. I'm still working on the CAD project to iron out as many bugs as possible, and this is where it stands. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7922/...eb41e03d_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7828/...86c131bf_c.jpg |
Re: Xkill's mini Interesting build with some nice ideas. Looking forward to more. "thumbsup" |
Re: Xkill's mini Blimey another impressive build , I do wonder if this mass of modding had anything to do with the interest dropping off. I wouldn’t put my standard Mini Pro up against something this tuned and expect to get any where close so I wonder if other with standard rigs have been put off? |
Re: Xkill's mini I think it just depends on what keeps you motivated. For me, I love the build and projecting part of the hobbie more than the driving (but still I love driving!). My 2.2Pro and Sporty have chassis designed by myself. The mini I had a vision of what I wanted to do and also I want to keep cost's down as much as possible. So far so good. To go to a Comp what motivates me is to go out, do my best, but most of all have fun and chat with like minded people! Results come second to all that. Never be ashamed of any result as long as I had fun. And for sure I will come with ideas to improve my cars... I think lack of parts is one of the reason mini died of, but with new ideas I think its making a come back. Its a always evolving sport, like everything else. I'm sure that even with a stock Rig you can still have fun, and that's what matters the most! Come to Eurocrawl in Austria in September and hang out! Clean the dust of those rigs ;) |
Re: Xkill's mini Come to Eurocrawl in Austria in September and hang out! Clean the dust of those rigs ;)
Nice idea but I doubt my other half will think that's a good idea LoL I think you're right about the parts issue I get pretty twitchy when a wheel gets stuck in a hole between rocks as I've stripped a few gears by mistake this way . |
Re: Xkill's mini Time for an update!! OD/UD on a mini is a big challenge... Especially UD. So I thought about using pinions and 3d printed parts to give me OD/UD. I use 14t and 20t pinions, but it will be very easy to change if I need to. Here are the pictures: https://live.staticflickr.com/7824/4...46434ab5_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/7846/4...e403bcff_c.jpg Just have to drill the pinions to 4mm. https://live.staticflickr.com/7853/3...b6ee6300_c.jpg And make a small shaft.. https://live.staticflickr.com/7904/4...8eceb0c5_c.jpg And it looks like this. https://live.staticflickr.com/7805/4...1d69c571_c.jpg Also got a drag link mocked up and the top plate is angled. The supports on the C-hubs adapters are there to improve overall rigidity. https://live.staticflickr.com/7829/4...397d41fe_c.jpg This top plate/servo mount/upperlink mount will be made out of G10 https://live.staticflickr.com/7877/4...9aefe0e6_c.jpg For servo I will be using a Sanwa PSG-CL. 16Kg @ 7.4v and I will be using it directly to the 2s battery (no BEC). I moved the tie rod and drag link to the bottom so I can increase castor angle. Still have to work on the steering to get the maximum angle left and right. https://live.staticflickr.com/7914/3...32ff2abc_c.jpg The plate has to be re-designed (among other parts...) because the servo gives me more space than I was expecting. https://live.staticflickr.com/7847/3...0dc95a79_c.jpg On the rear I'm using cut SCX10 rear shafts https://live.staticflickr.com/7877/3...42d14745_c.jpg Top link mount has to be re-desinged but nothing special... https://live.staticflickr.com/7863/3...77b6bda0_c.jpg Chassis is done and I'm happy with it. https://live.staticflickr.com/7874/4...ce8d2e4b_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/7910/4...60d65116_c.jpg Shocks are 70mm cheap Chinese stuff... But, to be fair they seem to work rather well! Shocks springs are also a work in progress. https://live.staticflickr.com/7908/4...7cd8818b_c.jpg Wheels are also done... https://live.staticflickr.com/7804/4...693e06ce_c.jpg ... and started looking at the foam setup.... I wanted the tires to be as tall as they could but the rover's are short to start with. Found and old 2.2 rover foam, cut it in half and trimmed it (the inner hole is the same size on the 2.2 and 1.9 rover foams). Combined with shaved sidewalls and cuts on the tire threads it seems to be OK, but I would prefer a bit softer setup... https://live.staticflickr.com/7872/4...7f7641b0_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/7807/4...f522d842_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/7871/3...25ef2e30_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/7819/4...2856753a_c.jpg Also made some bedlock for the wheels that works great. https://live.staticflickr.com/7894/3...c76af81a_c.jpg Made some links and this is how it looks: https://live.staticflickr.com/7805/3...45d4491e_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/7909/4...cf9377f1_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/7887/4...f86e7e55_c.jpg My printer crapped out on me so I couldn't print the new parts that I re-designed.... I also cut the driveshafts too short so I will be putting some SDI shafts since the original ones are so hard to find and expensive. Hope to get the rig on the rocks soon but first have to solve the printer issue. |
Re: Xkill's mini Very clean work man ! servo plate looks pretty thin but perhaps it s strong enough... any chance to make the same in CF ? btw, hope to see it run soon ! Congrats "thumbsup" |
Re: Xkill's mini This was printed just as a test piece so I can place the servo. It will be done out of 1.5mm G10, I think it will be strong enough. |
Re: Xkill's mini it's a very good work, the UD/OD ideia is great, hope it really works good. love the chassis design it seems to be very clean and functional, overall it will be run really good, i think :) |
Re: Xkill's mini Hell Of A Setup You Got Going There |
Re: Xkill's mini Looks very cool and innovative man! Can't wait to see it in action. "thumbsup""thumbsup" |
Re: Xkill's mini Thanks for the kind words. First I have to make it run and then we will see how it performs. If everything works as I hope I'm considering making the parts available in http://thingiverse.com/ so anyone can print these parts for free... |
Re: Xkill's mini Nice work on the chassis, it is very hard to find a bodiless chassis for the MRC. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk |
Re: Xkill's mini <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/pTTmTBPCh5c" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> Ops... I might have over done it.... Already working on a new version using 32P pinions and only 2t difference. |
Re: Xkill's mini That's quite a lot of OD/UD. Just don't ever need to back up. LOL |
Re: Xkill's mini True.... But the main problem was that the pinions for the OD would not survive much. So I'm working on a version with less OD (2 tooth difference instead of 6). We will see how it goes, but time is running out for me. |
Re: Xkill's mini Damn, you are a mad genius! |
Re: Xkill's mini The switch to 32pitch pinions in the front was a great move! Why didn't I go this route in the first place?! Just waiting for pinions to do the same on the rear. I will be using 13 and 15t pinions. The "ticking" sound on the video is the pinions in the rear skipping teeth... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KEEq9jSo7p8" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Re: Xkill's mini So, I guess I should do an update to this right... Was waiting for a long time for the 32pitch pinions to arrive so I could finish the car. Customs held the package for more than a month  and I finished the car the day before traveling to Austria for Eurocrawl. I went one day before the comp and used that day to test the mini for the first time. I have 15weight oil on all 4 shocks and Dravtech supersoft springs. The rear right was bottoming out a lot so I changed to soft (same as losi pink spring) and it was better. Going uphill the dlux weights are awesome, going downhill is a totally different thing... The car is super front heavy and the brushless combo gave me zero control on downhill. Definitely one of the first things I have to do something about... Just before leaving home I changed the from inserts for some memory foam on the outside and a harder, home made, inside foam. With all that weight the front was washing off on sidehills... Foam tunning is also on the to do list... Still, the car was a lot of fun to drive!!!! Zero issues and everything held together, only had a few "clicks" on the front end when I pushed it on a bind... I'll post pictures of the complete car and later I'll post the videos of my runs during Eurocrawl. Rear clearance My kids painted the skins of the Mini and the Pro car! They was super happy and so was I! Also added some weight to the rear... Rear upper link support. Rear UD case is 100% closed, unlike the front for clearance issues. Front OD. Next to it is the battery support and above the ESC support. Tire gets pretty low from all that weight... It's a tight fit but the receiver fits behind the servo and it's well protected. Still want to try and get a few more degrees, but will have to redesign some parts... The combo is very nice, going uphill... Lot's of control and enough power. I wander if a micro x will be better downhill...:roll: The SDI shafts are nice and twisted but no major binding. During Eurocrawl I got 9th out of 25 drivers and was super happy! Even more amazing my spare parts car (Mini Pro with a CF gatekepper, stock motor and weights on the wheels and traxxas OD mod), was finished in the morning of the comp and was shared by 2 of my friends. One of them got an amazing 7th place!! So now it's time to tune the car and iron out the bugs. It's a lot of fun driving this car! |

Re: Xkill's mini That's awesome! |
Re: Xkill's mini Bump all mrc threads lol |
Re: Xkill's mini Bump to your bump! Now with Outrunner power ;) But still some more testing to be done... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JgZXCi7FPfI" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Xkill's mini Did the od/ud file ever get posted? Getting a printer soon and would love to test it out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Xkill's mini Mini is still being fine tuned. It is now lowered and with a new tire in the front. I'm not happy with the recovery problems that the servo location gives me so I might redesign the whole front end... Also, the Servo is getting SUPER hot.... I don't think it will have a long life... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DwzAFMg2_fM" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Re: Xkill's mini Seems to do quite well! How ya feeling about that outrunner? |
Re: Xkill's mini Very happy with it. It beats the inrunner hands down! My main problem with the inrunner mas downhill control. I had zero of it! Basically the car would just take of, I could not have controlled decent. Now I have all the control in the world! But it's not all roses, I had to move from a 2s to a 3s lipo... And I will probably go one pinion up, from 13t to 14t. |
