It’s been awhile but if I remember the rears were over sprung. Try a heavier oil to slow down the rebound. Does it endo over jumps? I think I even ran as heavy as 70wt with the stock shocks before I settled on 50wt and 30 in the front.

Spring rate on the rear seems fine to me. Even without the spare tire/fine china wheel. The (uprated) front springs simply don't seem up to snuff. I haven't really driven it after the upgrades except for pavement straight-line and slow-speed maneuvering.

If the springs don't seem to support the vehicle's static weight, changing shock oils won't make it better. The shock oil doesn't support the vehicle, it only provides dampening for the shock's stroke.

The general rule, for any given suspension type, is to tune the springs to weight, the dampening to terrain/driving type, and the preload to ride height, if I'm not mistaken. Ideally in that order.

I mean to slow the rear down since it sits higher in the rear. Remember this is still a “toy” truck. It’s not going to be perfect and it’s going to bottom out when you jump it no matter what you do and if this is your first solid axle truck it’s going to handle different then what you are use to. Iv never had an rtr truck that was set up perfect. The shocks are always the first upgrade. Again get some prolines when you can and I think you will be happy with it.

Let's simplify things a little...Does your Baja Rey return to static ride height after compressing the suspension? Mine doesn't. I feel like it should.

Don't drive it offroad? A lot of that comes from roost coming off of the front wheels, so you could run mud flaps under the car (like rally cars do) to prevent some of it, but in all reality, that kind of wear & tear just goes with the territory.

Are you using the 125mm version "air shocks" on the rear? Does its travel match up close enough that it does not limit the factory shock?

This modification does not limit the suspension travel.

I am only dissatisfied with the quality of HD 125mm version "air shocks".
Since I had to squander a little metal, metal nut so that it would not scratch during the suspension travel.
The front HD 100mm "air shocks is good quality there is a slightly different design. It has a plastic insert in the bolt that does not scratch.

My Baja Rey hasn't been getting as much use as it deserves in recent history since the 2nd of my 3 packs for it quit, and the last one only holds ~1/2 its original capacity. I finally bit the bullet and ordered up a couple 7400mah 3s packs from SMC today. I'm generally a cheapskate when it comes to buying rc batteries, so I cringed a little when clicking "confirm order", but alas, my Baja Rey appreciates the good stuff.

There seems to have been a recent influx of interest in the 'Rey locally, so I bet we'll have enough cars to break off into a trophy truck/solid axle class at our local (backyard-ish) track by the time the rainy season is over. I'm interested in seeing how my buddy's Yeti compares now that he has his Exotek chassis in service. If nothing else, we're gonna have to have another big rc invasion day out at the dunes!

Open rear axle? Wasn't it a diff before?

The King body looks great. The Black Rhino is really boring.

No open diff. Only center and front were open. If the open the rear.. Its only to make it easier for people to control. Makes sense I guess. I sold my SBR because it had a open rear diff.

Oh that's right. I fogot because I locked all 3 diffs on my Rock Rey.

An open diff surely gives a person more control with RWD vehicles.

I felt i had more control without the avc, and nearly locking the center diff. I could throw it in the corners way harder.

I don’t see enough upgrades to buy it. I think they dropped the ball and could have done something really cool instead of update the body and open diff. I need to do an overhaul on mine and think I’ll just buy the bnd version for $350 and swap some parts.

There are enough upgrades for the baja reys. SSD, Losi, Vanquish/ incision, amd others have came out with upgrades. The inly upgrades i havent seen is a body set, center trans housing, and upper and lower plates.

I think some people can't handle RWD RCs. You need throttle control and some skill for that. Locking the rear should, in theory, make it more tail happy like an RWD vehicle and I can only imagine how many people would have complained about that.

Losi vehicles rarely get the aftermarket support they deserve. I'll never understand it. But Losi vehicles are usually stout out of the box and don't need upgrades. With that being said, there are more than a handful of upgrades for this chassis.

I'm hoping a clear version of that body is in my future. I'm considering the wheels, too...if they are considerably stronger. Otherwise, I'll be getting the Axial SCORE wheels. Rear light bar looks interesting, too.

I'm really wanting good shocks for it without spending $120 on Powerstrokes. I'm probably going to get some threaded Traxxas UDR 134mm GTR fronts (for the rear) and XXL GTRs for the front. Still going to be $100+, though.

I would definitely consider this a viable platform for purchase and upgrading. As Jato said, Losi vehcles are pretty robust and most of the "weak" points of the Baja Rey are covered by the aftermarket. SSD front bulkhead and 3rd member (I've got a VP Currie axle on the way, thanks for the 20% off Vanquish!), Exotek diff cups and front skid reinforcement, Hot Racing steering setup, and RPM front arms and bumper. As soon as I get the rear axle installed, I should be ready for 4s!

I'd say disable AVC, lock the rear axle, disconnect the front anti-roll bar, and point and shoot!
