I may look into a softer locker next. We’ll see how they hold up and how much crawling we do. The cogging has become more annoying and I really don’t want to swap out the motor. I’m open to suggestions if there is an ESC that helps without going for a full sensored setup. X2 these get pretty expensive.

Happy days yep I can imagine lol
You might be able to get a discount if you order both combos together from your lhs!
The monster X and 1515 2200kv is fast enough to leave a stock bomber totally in its dust lol
super smooth startup and absolutely no cogging

Default Dual Rock Rey Build

Call me a sucker or stupid. Either way I already have too much invested in these to have part availability shelve them. So against my initial plan I’m upgrading the front suspension and steering to aluminum. I’ll leave the week point the cheap Servo and see how that goes for now. I already did my RB now on to my son’s Monster. I also added the HR front sway bar. It’s a simple disconnect of one end if we do more crawling with them and connected it keeps the vehicle flatter. I installed the stiffest in the RB and it’s noticeably flatter in fast corners and traction rolls far less often.

Added weight in the front will help balance the truck in the air too so no harm there.

I’ll add more pics from the monster build up. This is what I have now.

Fingers crossed still that Losi doesn’t mothball them.

Here’s the HR front suspension, steering knuckle build photos. Note compressed vs full droop w the sway bar attached.

I’ve also now out grown my RR spares box.

Huge bearings!

Sway bar.

Full droop.

Fully compressed passenger side.

Need a bigger parts box.

Default Dual Rock Rey Build

First run w both and we crashed head on in 30 degree New England weather. Both broke the right front shock.

On a good note the front sway bar works so well I may leave the front end w the ear plug in it. The vehicles turn really well now. So much so that I can almost slide it on pavement w the throttle.

Looking good . The front swaybar can't connect to the stock suspension arms, right?

Not likely. The HR page says it requires the HR arms but I’ll check the stock ones tonight and see if they can be modified to adapt.

Thin is a pic of how the swaybar attaches. No real way to attach to the stock arm unless you make some other sort of modification. Probably worth trying if the HR arms end up out of stock.

How has the rock rey been for your son? I'm thinking about getting one for my 5 year old who likes speed and going through the woods! Then I'd secretly bring it down to rock race @ Rce...

I’d say if you leave it stock the breakage will be limited to how hard he crashes it. Most likely victims will be steering knuckles, bumper, front cage parts.... possibly a front shock. DO not run anything more than 2S. They are plenty fast enough on 2S.

My son learned RC on a Losi Mini Crawler then Mini DT, Mini Erevo and now this. He started at about 5. I would not have let my son drive the RR at 5. It’s a heavy fast truck that can break an ankle... particularly his.

But...

You will like it a lot!!! Have fun.

I think I’d employ some throttle limiting when he is driving it. Maybe good for me too...

Default Dual Rock Rey Build

It’s school Vaca week in MA and my son and I were able to hit our favorite spot for a little while today.

A few pics of the RB and Monster in the wild. The front sway bar has been the best mod yet in my opinion. Totally changed the handling. Still soft suspension but stays flat turning into more corners and the back can be broken loose with throttle.

We did notice some problems after our run. I stripped one hex in the rear wheel of the RB, broke the drive pin on the other side, lost one wheel nut and the front “ear plug” diff is a lot more slip than lock on both. I’ll have to look into that.

The Monster is fine. No problems, my son has been gentle on it lately.

Next modification... to avoid more broken shocks and cracked bumpers I’m going to try to make this work.

RPM BajaRey Bumper Mods.

Clearance for the bulkhead.

Clearance for the shock towers.

Clearance for the tires at full lock.

More to come.

So I’ve finished the RB finally. The change doesn’t look bad and I like the added protection. Pics attached of the Monster (stock) VS RB (modified)

Looks good. Wasn't sure if the RPM or Tbone bumper would be better.

Finished them both. Looks like plenty of clearance with more protection for the shocks.

To All,

These steering servos are horrible!!! What do you all suggest for a steering servo. Please include any other mods required to make that servo work.

Thanks.

Did you pick a servo for your rock rey yet? I installed a savox 1257tg that I had from the cyclic on my helicopter. It is super fast, not as torquey as you would want for crawling, but has done fine for bashing. I'm sure if you are in the market, savox will have some with more torque for similar cost.
