Default The chunky monkey Rock Rey build thread

Well here goes my 1st RC build. Started out with the RTR Rock Rey. I love the car so far. But seeing that I am now at work in Africa for the next 4wks the upgrades have already started to ship to the house LOL. This is going to be a rock racer. It has already survived its 1st competition. I literally had it running 2hrs before the race and gave it a go. Came in 8th place out of 17 drivers, no too bad. Main thing is I had a blast and the hobby community seems awesome.

Proline front and rear shocks

Center diff spool

Bad horsie diff grease for the front.

Carbon fiber body panels from Ebay. They look cool to me, just have to see if they hold up. https://www.ebay.com/itm/LOSI-ROCK-R...RVq:rk:12:pf:0

Can decide which lower and upper rear links to go with.

Here are some pics of the new toy.

Nice ride. Just got mine a couple weeks ago and love it. What do you mean by center diff spool? Like locker?

Yes, locked center diff. I'm used to more 1/1 lingo.

Besides the locker did you do anything else to reinforce the drive train since it’s locked now? Just trying to get an idea bc I’ve heard varying stories about breaking parts after locking, and I’m planning on locking my center soon. Have the part just need more info before I do it.

I haven't done anything to it yet. I am currently offshore at work. I will be back in a few weeks. I am kind of following a local guy with his modifications for our Rock racing series. I have no RC experience, so just kind of seeing what others are doing.

Welcome to the site! I look forward to your build.

Let us know what you think of that Bad Horsie grease. It's new to me.

I went with the Losi aluminum trailing arms because JEC never has stock. I have the kit so it came with aluminum uppers. I'm not sure what options exist out there.

I have seen that Hot racing has aluminum upper rears and Vanquish has Stainless. There was some on Ebay that looked really good with steel rod ends.

So here are some more parts that are on the the way.

SSD 3rd member

Hot Racing Aluminum Axle Upper Link Mount

Vanquish Products KMC 2.2 XD229 Machete Blue

Pro-Line 2.2" Dual Stage Closed Cell RC Foam Inserts

Pro-Line 2.2" Hyrax G8 Rock Terrain Truck Tires

Vanquish Products SLW Hex Hubs

Losi aluminum servo horn

Also went ahead and ordered a locker for the front diff too. Might as well bight the bullet and see what breaks with this thing fully locked and rock racing it.

I think I have more than double the price of the RTR. Ehhhh I think the wife might try to disable my paypal account. Online shopping is dangerous with this new hobby of mine. I am going to try and resist buying anything else why I am at work. I dont even have more than 3 batteries though it.

Can I ask which SLW hex hubs you went with? I’m running the same setup as you but I forgot to get the hex hubs. Also, how hard was it to mount those beadlocks to the tires? I had a rough time.
